"I've been meaning to read this for a while and ultimately it came down to whether to pick this or Fables as my next series. This one.
The horror element is there but this is clearly a human story detailing the survivors of a zombie apocalypse as they find their way in the new world. The black and white imagery is wonderful and starkly beautiful to look at and the characters are an interesting bunch.
Still, there's not much in here yet that's any different to other zombie features, the revelations and events aren't anything new. Despite that I suspect this is a long boil and I'm more than keen to pick the next volume up and continue the journey."
"In his introduction to this first trade volume of an ongoing book, Robert Kirkman explains how this series means to fulfill the promise of every zombie movie ever made. After an hour and a half, now that the characters have been established, a new post-apocalyptic landscape has been sketched, and a few hardy survivors have made it through the first few weeks of an undead onslaught, the typical zombie films ends, leaving the viewer with a voracious appetite for more. What happens to these people? How else has the world changed? Can it be rebuilt? What happens to normally decent people after the world turns upside down and law, culture, and all institutional infrastructure collapses? Which ultimately begs the question, who--or what--exactly are we, when all these support systems cease to protect us from ourselves? Are we more like the zombies--mindlessly wandering, eating, surviving--than we'd like to think? Continuing the zombie story and expanding that typical narrative's exploration of human nature under duress is what Kirkman promises and that's precisely what he begins to deliver in Volume 1 of Walking Dead.
In the details of the writing Kirkman is sometimes lacking (which is pretty much true for most graphic novels). At times the dialogue sounds a bit wooden, and the characters and their relationships a bit broadly or crudely conceived. That said, the overall story remains riveting, direct, and stark, making up for any lack of depth with an exhilarating pace, brutal plot twists, and an unflinching point of view of what happens to your average Joe or Jane when pushed to the breaking point."
"Let me start out by saying WOW. This is an intense piece of work. I read this a while ago, but it is still pretty vivid in my mind. Before going any further, I should let you know a couple of things:
1. It is VERY violent 2. There is some sexual tension, that is eventually... released.
Knowing this, I probably definately wouldn't suggest it to school libraries. I have the series in my teen collection, but it has a big OT (older teen) sticker on it, so that people don't "accidentally" come upon it and read it. In all honesty, I think it is probably meant for adult collections. However, besides the sex and gore it still really holds up on its own.
A big reason that I knew that this series was going to be really good was due to the dedication on the first few pages. The author dedicates the book to George A. Romero, who is a god among horror purists (or I think that he should be). I won't wax poetic about Mr. Romero for too long, but one of the reasons that his movies are so amazing, is because while there may be a lot of violence and gore, his movies also make you THINK. Not possible? I beg to differ.
I will use Romero's original movie, Night of the Living Dead as an example. The movie was made in 1968, the year that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. There were obvious tensions in the air because of civil rights and equal rights for African Americans. So what does George Romero do? He casts Duane Jones, an African American as the lead. According to IMDB, "This was the first time a black actor was cast in a lead role of a major motion picture that did not specify the part had to be played by a black actor." I would say that this is not small potatoes.
He also used the opportunity that flesh eating zombies gave him to show how society can break down quickly without order. It breaks down even more when you are running for your life from flesh eating zombies.
Take all of this into consideration when you read the review and when (because you really should) read this series."
"I've always been a fan of zombie epics and this is certainly one of them, and among them, the best. I won't go into a whole lot of detail in hopes not to spoil anything for anyone, but if you were to take the kind of drama-between-survivors kind of scenario like LOST, put it in the South and add zombies, well, that's exactly what The Walking Dead is. It's less about WHAT the individuals are surviving, but more about THAT they are surviving. Entire sections of the novel ignore the talk of zombies altogether, focusing on the characters, their back stories, their lives and loved ones than how much "buck shot shell it took to kill the sum'bitch."
Rick Grimes is the main chracter, a small town cop, and he's immediately likeable with his plucky attitude and believable humane side (he cries more than once within the first few chapters of the first graphic novel.) He's a family man, focused on getting to his family and protecting them. He is someone we are supposed to like, see ourselves as and relate to. Even though in later novels his choices are questionable, but all the while, he is a man who thinks about the group's benefit over his own every time.
The art style is modestly manga-like, everyone is kind of exaggerated looking and it lends itself well to the story, giving it a kind of alternate reality vibe. Tony Moore does the art on just this one graphic novel, the art style shifting to a darker, more realistic style from the second novel on.
Robert Kirkman has worked with Image comics for quite some time and has done some tremendous work, I'm told, that is--if you can excuse the tongue in cheek farse BATTLE POPE, that is. But, still, this is a masterwork here. Truly engaging story, great art, honest and believable characters.
True escapism and a totally addicting read. I suggest picking up two at a time so that you have a lot of content to read since one graphic novel can be zipped through in a matter of hours. Despite the short reading time on each novel, it's worth taking your time and savoring the details and really enveloping yourself in the art. Soon to be a TV series on AMC, these books are fantastic for not just horror fans!"
