"Organizational Change is a broad topic with much literature devoted to it and John Kotter perhaps more than any other can claim to be one of its greatest pioneers. Our Iceberg is Melting is a cute and simple, metaphoric story. It follows the lives of a penguin colony facing the need for change with approaching danger afoot. The story itself is basically meat on the bones of the 8 steps for Organizational Change developed by Kotter himself. Whether structured in a complex research article or presented in a simple story about penguins, the fundamental points of Kotter remain the same; thus the steps remain valued yet approachable to anyone seeking information on them. For anyone that may dislike this book because of its simplicity or a misconception of "all to obvious points" fails to recognize the success of the revolutionary affect Kotter's model has had on I/O Psychology and Business academia. Kotter's claim to fame is mostly due to these steps and much research and organizational application stems from the approaches provided by him. I would mostly suggest this book however to anyone unfamiliar with Organizational Change literature as it can provide the layperson a simple framework for the underlying principles of Kotter's model."
"This is a book about how businesses can adapt to changes in the organization disguised as a fable about penguins. It is a fast read, and entertaining, so it should be easy to get your employees to read it even if they (or you) don't enjoy traditional non-fiction business books. There is also a straightforward traditional section at the end in case someone didn't quite get it, plus advice on how you can use the book within your own organization. But most importantly, as my own experience of leading through change can attest, the information is absolutely useful and will actually work if executed properly."
"I read this book in an hour. It is a fable on how to deal with change. It seems to me that upper management types like this book because they think that it is dumbed down enough that even their employees can understand it. Nothing new or profound."
"Very quick and fun to read. It is about how to get change to occur in an organization. It is in a fable form with pictures! At the end of every school year, we are given a new book to read and in August will come back together as a staff and discuss the book. It will become our theme for the next school year."
