"Consider me officially torqued off. This war has to go down as the biggest blunder in American history and the deceit that went into its beginnings and how it was carried out is mind numbing in the light of day. This book is a cloudless day in July and lays out some pretty compelling facts abouth this mess. To think that we have been spending 100 Billion dollars a year for this debacle while the rest of our economy and social programs go down the toilet should be enough to get people in the streets Tehran style. But oh, I forgot, Michael Jackson is dead and that is all that matters. Thank you Wolf Blitzer for your keen insight on the Jackson autopsy while our soldiers die in the sand and our nations schools fall apart and healthcare is being stalled again by fear mongering on the issue which has been happening since the TRUMAN ADMINISTRATION! Can you tell this book has angered me a bit? Well, enough of my gabbin'. I've got to go watch CNN and MSNBC so I can find out what is going on with John and Kate Plus 8 and the arrest of Henry Loius Gates. Important stuff.Oh yeah, 38 dead in Afghanistan this month. The bloodiest month in the EIGHT YEARS we have been fighting there. Wonder what the Octomom thinks of that."
"This book was very educational. I learned a lot about the war in Iraq and Hicks has fantastic sources and great quotes from those in the field and in a position to know what was going on.
The reason it only gets three stars is that I was a bit disappointed in the narrative. Hicks seems so quote dependent that the book doesn't read well. So while the book was informative, it reads like an immense newspaper article. I felt like he was just too lazy to map out a cohesive narrative or structure and so there was just a lot of information organized chronologically. Also, I would have enjoyed a bit more biography on some of the principal characters.
Still, this was a very educational book. It shows just how poorly executed the war was in the beginning and that, despite the improvements we've made, a lot of this could have been avoided had we not been so willfully blind, foolish, and ignorant in the beginning of the war."
"The first half of this book was profoundly disturbing. Stuff I already sort of half knew about the arrogance and idealist blindness of the post 9-11 Bush White House was confirmed, and much worse, more childish, more inexcusable incompetence was revealed. It's a tragedy, clearly. The second half sort of repeated that theme, and got mired in lots of individual soldier's stories. Ricks is not a pacifist. His point is not that war is hell, though I don't think he would argue that is isn't; his point is that we shouldn't go to war without thinking about the consequences of both action and inaction. I agree with Ricks that stupidity in these contexts is criminal and inexcusable, and this was surely illuminating, but I think his book could have done its job in many fewer pages."
"Well, here is another magnificent reminder of the truth that those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. If this book isn't a classic already, I'll eat my hat.
Too often this notion is understood as studying in the superficial intellectual sense, but what is not understood is that it really amounts to Socrates' notion that an unexamined life is not worth living, and thus also that history must lead us to the examination of the unexamined beliefs which drive us, and which will set us up for failure again and again, unless we deal with them.
This is Shakespearian in it's dimensions. The US Army in Iraq, for a cause that is not clearly defined, or believable, without a strategy or clear objectives. If nothing else it is proof (again) that a democracy cannot fight colonial wars. It once was taught that you could not do it with draft soldiers, but clearly you can't do it with professional soldiers either. And people don't do well in ill defined situations where they cannot win.
While this book is massive, it reads easily, because it is written in a very bright and intelligent way, and just carries you along, so that it's a quick read in the end. Prize winning material, so no surprise, it won a prize."
