"This is the first Meltzer book I have read. Maybe I had too high of expectations after reading reviews of his other books. Also my expectations were raised when I read the book's back cover references - comparing him to Dan Brown... And I had secret expectations of learning some deep dark secret/s about the Masonic Order. Well, after 38-days of reading, none of those expectations were met. This is probably the most "herky-jerky" book I have read. Not only did it have lots of lateral twists and turns in the plot (enough to make one dizzy) but it also had sudden changes in momentum in the book, where the story and action jumped from the pages to where one had to laboriously and attentively extract the story line. I enjoyed Meltzer's plot/story line where the "3" use intelligence to swindle the U.S. Government. I thought Meltzer did a good job with his characters. I especially enjoyed the insight that Meltzer provided about retired U.S. Presidential staff, libraries, etc. Unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed the short chapters in the book. The short chapters helped me set goals during the slow read times. I am going to try to read another one of Meltzer's books in the future. Let's hope that I can rank it at least 3 stars."
"Once I started this one, I couldn't put it down! Fast-paced, lots of suspense, thrilling!! I had read Meltzer"s Millionaires and The Zero Game and didn't enjoy them as much as this one. The story was great with twists and turns all over the place! Great read!"
"The main character, Wes Holloway, who is a presidential aide, is shot during what seems like a botched assassination attempt. Another advisor, Ron Boyle, is killed. The president has his picture taken during the ordeal, and in the picture it looks as though he is hiding behind a female bystander. The president's reelection chances are shot to hell.
In the second chapter, we find out that Boyle is really alive and the assassin escapes his locked ward.
The rest of the novel deals with the aftermath of that fateful day, political posturing, and a secret society and a secret Masonic code that dates back to Thomas Jefferson.
Scott Brick's just-the-facts narration seems to simultaneously keep the story alive and make it drone along, if that's possible. I think this one could have been put on a diet of, say, ten to fifteen percent without losing any of the story. In this case, a leaner manuscript would have gotten a better rating from me."
"Usually, I'm a fantasy girl all the way. Give me a book about princes, knights (even without their shining armour), and maybe throw in a pinch of magic, and I'll eat it up like it was Ben & Jerry's Phish Food. But every once in a while, you just need a break from the things you love (which is why we all eat those few vegetables before going back to the gooey brownie). My dad, who is the complete opposite of a fantasy lover, recommended this book to me, and I actually enjoyed reading it. I think that one of the purposes of a good book is to challenge the reader's way of thinking. This book definitely does that. It makes the reader consider the foundations of the United States, and whether history gives everybody the glossed up version of major points of history, or if a secret society is...well...secretly running the show. It does make one consider about their roots, and their government.
Eight years ago, President Manning was shot at while campaigning at the Detona Race course. His Deputy Chief of Staff, and his best friend, Ron Boyle, was shot and killed. His personal assitant, Wes, was hit by a riccocheting bullet, and half his face was destroyed. It is a day that Wes will never be able to forget, or forgive himself for. Now,eight years later, when Boyle suddenly appears back in Wes' life, it is an opportunity to put right past wrongs--but this journey may go to far for Wes."
