"Gregor Samsa turns into a bug. Oh no! I spoiled the plot! I think everyone knows this story. Having read it many years ago, I re-read it because NIgel is reading it for a lit class. The characters were flat and I didn't care about any of them. It was like watching something through a window, unable to hear the dialog and feeling like you weren't sure what was going on. The redeeming point for me was Gregor's relationship with his sister."
"By far the best stories in this collection are his two most famous, "Metamorphosis" and "The Penal Colony." The others I found to be a tad on the boring side."
"I've never been able to take "The Metamorphosis" straight, but in this edition it is preceded by numerous earlier little stories and even fragments, each showing a different facet of Kafka's imagination, all intriguing. Of the longer pieces, I like the grouping called "The Country Doctor" very much, and better than I do the two more famous titles included. And the translator's introduction is worth the price of admission in itself--very illuminating in several ways."
"This is a collection of the short writings and stories that Franz Kafka authorized to be published during his lifetime. As there are alot of writings here, some of the material here is hit or miss. However, I'm giving this collection four stars based on the three excellent works that have really resonated with me:
The Metamorphosis - Perhaps Kafka's most famous work, this story of a young man's physical transformation from man into insect saddened me more than anything. Depicting the man's forced isolation from not only society, but also his own family, it is an allegory that so many of us in this world can relate to. This was one of the finest, most affecting stories I've ever read, and the crown jewel of this collection.
In the Penal Colony - People have called The Metamorphosis horrifying, but to me, this story was significantly more so. It serves as an interesting character study of governments and the officials that run them, and how their ideologies can consume their judgment despite any lack of rationality in their methods. A recent ex-American president would have been well served by reading this story.
A Hunger Artist - A man, alone, in a cage, without a single soul to understand him, less important, and less understood, than an animal. This is a harrowing, short story about isolation. Don't read this very short story if you're feeling down."
