Author Kate Banks creates a "story within a story" within the pages of this book. The use of text and space here is cleverly inventive. I enjoyed the creativity of layout by using the text to serve as a template for Max's word collection, to the point where the main text is telling Max's story. In addition, Boris Kulikov uses a combination of realism and detail with elements of asymmetric balance (with Max and his Alligator friend, and the Crocodile and little Snake in his story)and reflection (the first two pages of artwork show Max's family surrounding the dining table, with collections on display) extremely well here. He captures the expressions of the people within this tale exceptionally, and even taking the time to distinguish Max from his child counterparts in appearance. Overall, this story should encourage young readers to use their imagination and create stories of their own.
Language Arts/History Lesson Ex: You could do a number of things with Lang. Arts here. I would have the kids use magazines and newspapers I'd bring for them and have them create a story by cutting out the words and pasting them to form a sentence or sentences on paper. I also have the thought to do a history lesson using the Guiness Book of World Records, and have the kids do a little bit of research to find out some of the largest collections in the world, using different items (stamps, coins, hats, etc.)"
"The story of a young boy whos collects words. He starts collecting words and then he uses the words to make sentences and thgen sentences to make stories. This is a good idea for helping students build vocabulary. It prompts students to see writing in a new light."
"as a librarian, how can i not love this book about words? while max's brothers collect objects, max decides to collect words. see how this story begins to engage max's brothers out of their collections and into his!"
