About this title: With her disarming, intimate, completely accessible voice, and dry sense of humor, Ephron shares her ups and downs in a candid, hilarious look at women who are getting older and dealing with the tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty nests, and life itself.

"after hearing good things about this book, i was very interested to read it. i like books that make me laugh, & i am always interested in reading about aging. this book is essentially a collection of humorous essays on the topic of becoming a woman of a certain vintage.
unfortunately...i didn't get it. maybe i will feel differently when i was 64, but i found it really difficult to relate to essay's like "maintenance," in which nora ephron details all the small ways older women make an effort to maintain the illusion of youth, through hair dye, miracle skin creams, manicures, etc...it seemed to make a lot of assumptions about the readership's disposable income & priorities in terms of seeming ageless. i feel like i understood what she was going for, & undoubtedly it spoke to a segment of the female population, but...not me. at all. i can't even begin to imagine making the effort to blow out my hair even once. i have never in my life had a manicure. i don't think this makes me any better than anyone else, but...it's a world that is foreign to me in many ways.
i didn't hate the book at all. parts were clever & amusing, some parts even kind of really did feel like wisdom being passed down from someone going through what i will hopefully also go through eventually (consider the alternative). but not being a wealthy upper east side critically-acclaimed screenwriter, i failed to appreciate this book as much as i wanted. oh, & it's also unbelievably short. i read the whole thing in literally about an hour & a half. it takes longer to read "vogue," even when you don't stop to look at the ads!"
"If there's anything more divine than Nora Ephron's writing, it is Nora Ephron reading Nora Ephron's writing, which is what you get on this audiobook, a perfect companion for the irritant of driving around Los Angeles, or, I suspect, anywhere, but Los Angeles is especially irritating. Am I channeling her, now? She writes very simple, almost flat sentences, each word carefully selected for maximum punch, as if the whole thing were waiting for her to deliver it in her empathetic deadpan voice. Here's a woman who casually tosses off references to her fabulous life, The Apthorp apartment in NY, her various screenplays and marriages, trips to Africa, et. al., but nevertheless somehow manages to make it all seem quite normal, much less "real" than the paralyzing fear of getting through life with its many indignities, especially the life of a modern woman. We learn about cooking, "maintenance" (meaning skin care, exercise, etc), furniture, apartments, books, writing, technology, children, divorce, love, death, politics, and, hovering throughout, a deep and abiding infatuation with New York City. She has captured my heart. There, I've said it."
"I'm a big fan of Nora Ephron ever since Heartburn, so there's very little she can do wrong in my book. Any woman over 40 should get a charge out of this book. I bought it on audio and played it on a trip to Charleston. At 4 hours it was perfectly timed, and the time flew by.
Her sense of humor (as in When Harry Met Sally) is intact, as she pokes fun at herself and all the foibles of humankind that walk around in the form of women trying to be hip, young and chic. From face creams, to waddled necks, to food fads, and girl-to-girl secrets, she had me laughing out loud.
This might not be everyone's cup of latte, but Ephron makes a good beach read for summer, or those long drives to visit the grandkids. (I have neither beach nor grandchildren, so you know it's good.)
I realize I thought this was her latest book but I guess it's just come out on audio. It was actually published in 2006. (sorry, Rose)."
