"Dunia bawah laut selalu menyimpan banyak misteri!
"When I read the first few chapters, I had my doubts about this books-- it was too montotoned. It didn't really seem like it had much life in it.
This being a book I wanted to read (for summer's sake), I read it all the way through, and of course, ALL in a day. Yup, at 328 pages, no? So at 11pm at night, I was like, "Wow, that was a great book."
The next morning my mom woke me up to, "Why did you finish that book last night? What are you going to read now?" I, of course, was unblievably sleepy due to my habit of not being able to sleep until an hour after going to bed. So I just replied my usual, "I don't know..." And then she left.
As I was brushing my teeth that morning I realized something really particalur about the book; it had no plotline. At first I was like, "Maybe I was too tired to notice it had one and maybe the part where the divers drown and stuff is the falilng action and where she finds out what Air really does to Ingo is the climax..." As you can see, I wasn't exactly like myself--I rambled on and on. Then I concluded that, "I'm not really good at identifying plot structure." Which is true, but even an amateur like me should be able to identify a book's plot structure.
Going back to the walk two days ago, August 7th, I remembered what my brother said about different types of writers: ones that appreciate the English language, those that do not care (for the English langauge), the Storyteller, and those that... I always forget the last one... =_= but we were talking about my friend's story and he said she was one that respected the English langauge. Not only that, he commented on how she created a world but didn't give enough information, this is how I feel about this book also (~forgot this was a series~ But even though that, it should feel complete...=/).
My brother and I also discussed what genres of books we liked. When I explained to him I wasn't much interested in fantasy anymore due to overused plotline, he told me he had been over fantasy for a few years already. I told him more of my dislikes, old books. No, I don't have anything against the great smell of musky books, it's just... I can't read it. My brother agreed, he didn't hate those who loved books such as Redwall or Mossflower, he just didn't like reading it and no one held it against him; you are what you are (from the phrase: `I am what I am.`).
He then told me what I just couldn't put my finger on, my hatred. He told me he had noticed older books had no plotline and he also learned that through his English AP class. He explained that back then (the book is from 1952), they didn't have guidelines called a plotline-- it's either action all the way through or happy and calm with little action. So now I'm like, "Ah, so that's why I couldn't figure out this person's plot."
Random (skip this if you like...): For some reason, this reminded me of other things people didn't have back then...like...like clefs. No, not 'clefts", I actually mean 'clefs', as in the musical clefs. `Ah...I get it now.` You must be saying to yourself. Well, my piano teacher, the other day, told me why we had the treble and base clef--Bach made it! Whoot! Thanks to Bach, not only do we get awesome music, we also can now read music easily. Wow, imagine reading a music sheet with the staffs combined, you wouldn't be able to read it properly, it'd be quite a mess!
Back to the point...
Dunmore's writing would be better if she wrote it now. ^_^
Even through all this muck, I'm willing to give the author another try and is going to read the next book."
"The writing was too slow and languid to hold my attention, the plot too meandering. It had more to do with the young girl's missing father than the mermaids and their culture and why their family is so intimately connected to the realm of Ingo. That would be fine if it were merely a book about loss and grieving. But then mixing in the mythological elements was not a good idea, as it splits the focus, to no apparent purpose. Perhaps it is handled better in the sequels, but I am not going to waste my time finding out."
