"This book, told in diary form, is told in the voice of a fictional friend of Wallis Simpson. Maybell Brumby, socialite and new widow leaves Baltimore, Maryland to visit family and friends in London. There she reconnects with an old school friend (Wallis) and chronicles their life in London in the pre-WWII years, their introduction to the future King Edward (who goes by David), the growing relationship between the King and Wallis, and the fallout from that relationship (divorces, abdication, exile).
While the book is interesting and entertaining, it drags in spots with too many names and the description of too many parties. I think the author actually meant to do this to show the atmosphere of 'living for parties' that these people live.
You are really left with the impression (and rightly so) that these are not good people and England should be glad Edward abdicated in favor of his brother George VI (and current Elizabeth II's father)."
"It seemed to take forever to get through this book, but I'm glad I spent the time on it. The narrator is Maybell Brumby, a fictional friend of Wallis Simpson, who helps out and pays the way for Simpson and the King. Despite her cluelessness and cattiness, Maybell is at times a sympathetic character and seems to learn a bit in the end. Her relationships with her niece and nephew redeem her a great deal.
The story of Wallis Simpson is well known, but this book gave more insight to the relationship and to who Wallis and David, as he was known to friends, were. The book does not paint either in a flattering light.
I did wonder how their relationship may have helped bring about social change in terms of acceptance of divorce.
I think this would be a great selection for a book club as there are lots of issues to discuss: Friendship, family, cultural norms, politics, etc."
"A real page-turner...I couldn't put it down. If you like stories about the Royal Family or the British upper classes, you will probably enjoy this view of the abdication crisis from the viewpoint of a fairly dimwitted (fictional) insider. A great light read for if you are sick in bed, or for the beach."
