About this title: A biography of Nathaniel Bowditch, who grew up in the late 1700s and dreamed of becoming a sailor. When his small size prevented him for achieving this goal, Bowditch's determination resulted in years of on-land studying of the sea, ships, and astronomy. He eventually wrote the book THE AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR, which taught sailors how to use astronomy and mathematics to navigate their ships. Winner of the 1956 Newbery Medal.

"I was delightfully surprised at how much I loved this Newberry Award winner. Inspiring, exactly the kind of book I am looking for my 5th grade son to read. Historical fiction based on the life of Nathaniel Bowditch, the book teaches you moral lessons being a self-starter & learning self-control, as well as interesting facts about navigation, mathematics, and science, while still being an engrossing and endearing story."
"A fictionalized account of the early years of the life of Nathaniel Bowditch, a self-taught mathematical genius who is considered the father of modern maritime navigation, Carry On offers inspiring lessons for young readers. Bowditch persisted in his studies while serving as an indentured servant, teaching himself Latin (so he could read Newton) and French. According to the book, he shared his knowledge with shipmates -- these moments are the most touching in the book. I thought the book was good (I want to give it 3 1/2 stars but goodreads won't let me) but my early enthusiasm flagged in later chapters."
"Nathanael Bowditch did not have an easy life. He was highly intelligent and yet he had to put off his plans to help provide for his family. In the course of time he invents a method of navel navigation that is still in use today along with teaching himself multiple languages using his Bible. I think every teenage who thinks things in life should come easy should read this book!"
"I can't remember why I put this on my reading list but I am really happy I did. This biographical fiction was written in the mid 1950s and is a good example of books written for kids then. It doesn't hide the problems but doesn't dwell on them so that the reader is terribly depressed. This book about the genius Nathaniel Bowditch was interesting and educational. Nat had little opportunity for formal education but used all his resources and became a renowned mathmathician and navigator. He taught himself Latin, French and Spanish as well as higher mathmatics and astronomy. It was a delightful read and would give every reader a hope that they too could rise above misfortune, never be becalmed, and succeed even if they have to "sail by ash breeze.""
