"A tale about the struggle between good and evil. It was a fast, very interesting read; one that kept me eager to return to its pages. It is a tale that makes one question their own position in the struggle of good and evil, as Coelho says one person can be a reflection of all people. As much as I wanted to believe the villagers picked good I think the ending was a cop out. It seemed to me they only picked good when Miss Prym explained to them how they would ultimately never be able to get away with the fortune. So did they chose not to murder an innocent defenseless old woman because good prevailed or was it only because she convinced them they wouldn't be able to reap the treasure. It poses another interesting question: Do people behave good only because of their fear of punishment? If there was no punishment for bad behavior what might the world look like?"
Most people either love Paulo Coelho's writing or absolutely hate it. I haven't seen many who have straddled the fence on this author. I'm in the former category, though I know quite a few people who don't care for him at all. While some believe his writing is too simplistic, I, on the other hand, sometimes crave simplicity! I do quite a bit of heavy reading (though not recently), and it's nice sometimes to curl up with one of Coelho's books and know that I will probably read it in one sitting. I also believe his 'simple' books have a much deeper meaning to them, and this story is also indicative of that.
One day a stranger comes to Viscos, an idyllic mountain town. The stranger has a plan to tempt the villagers with some gold. They only have to do one thing to get the gold, but that act is contrary to the basic character of the town's residents. There hasn't been any trouble in the village for years, and when Miss Prym, the local barmaid, is told of the plan, she is confident the villagers will be able to withstand the temptation.
The story raises the question of whether humans are generally good or generally evil, and also why God, if there is one, would allow evil things to happen to good people.

A community devoured by greed, cowardice, and fear. A man persecuted by the ghosts of his painful past. A young woman searching for happiness. In one eventful week, each will face questions of life, death, and power, and each will choose a path. Will they choose good or evil?
In the remote village of Viscos -- a village too small to be on any map, a place where time seems to stand still -- a stranger arrives, carrying with him a backpack containing a notebook and eleven gold bars. He comes searching for the answer to a question that torments him: Are human beings, in essence, good or evil? In welcoming the mysterious foreigner, the whole village becomes an accomplice to his sophisticated plot, which will forever mark their lives.
Paulo Coelho's stunning novel explores the timeless struggle between good and evil, and brings to our everyday dilemmas fresh perspective: incentive to master the fear that prevents us from following our dreams, from being different, from truly living.
The Devil and Miss Prym is a story charged with emotion, in which the integrity of being human meets a terrifying test.
The above words somehow hit me !! I had faced the worse so far in my carrier life and somehow I've learn so much from my mistake ... the reslut was awsome, I got great position now and stable carrier. I would never walk this far if i dont taste the pain of failure and renew my self after that. So ... yes, I completely understand what Coelho says about the above quote."
"This book is a very thoughtful treatise on the Nature of Man, Good, and Evil. Beautifully written and thought-provoking. Coelho does a very good job of describing how the battle between God and The Devil, Good and Evil, rages and resolves in one individual. He also does a wonderful job of breaking down the conflict between the good of many versus the good of one. I fell in love with conflicted, far-from-perfect Chantal. I admired wise and lonely Berta, and I even liked the tortured and "evil" stranger. I don't think this book really reasons that there is "good" in the world, which is pretty alarming and sad. I think most the characters in the book can much more easily be persuaded to do an evil act, than to turn down gain for "good". I found the story itself to linger in my mind mostly because things could very easily have gone either way at the end, and it was not some beautiful "People are Good" moment at all . So, I thought this book was a quick and short read that was still very powerful, lyrical, and thought-provoking. My first entry into Paulo Coelho's writing, I'm sure I'll be back soon."
