"The author takes a close and detailed look at the events of the days following the Lincoln assassination, and plus a lot of good background information. He pays a lot of attention to Booth's conspirators (especially Lewis Powell and the attack on Seward), which is satisfying because so often they are more of a side note. I know I shouldn't even read those "for discussion" questions many books are including in the back these days, but there was one that set me off, "Have we, nearly 150 years after the great crime, forgiven John Wilkes Booth?" Maybe I am out of the swim of things, but I didn't even realize this was on the table for consideration. Hello? NO. I haven't even forgiven Aaron Burr yet, and he has more of a case since Hamilton shares the poor judgment of having agreed to an illegal duel in the first place.
Grade: A Recommended: Good for history buffs, I think even if you already know a lot about the Lincoln assassination, you will find some new things here."
"This is an incredible book...difficult to put down as the action just keeps coming fast and furious. Which is a bit amazing as it is an all-to-true story. Mr. Swanson has indeed done his homework as his detailed descriptions are just amazing!
The book starts out just a few days before the assassination as both John Wilkes Booth and his cohorts plot to kill not only President Lincoln, but also vice-president Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. From that point, the actions starts to move quickly. We see Booth's minute-by-minute movements at Ford's Theater, and the other would-be assassin's movements as they stalk their targets.
Lewis Powell nearly succeeds in killing Seward and his son, but Seward, who is already sick in bed survives just barely. His son also survives although his wounds are even more severe. Powell escapes.
Meanwhile, Johnson's assassin does not fulfill his part of the bargain and flees the scene. After all this, Booth's incredible adventure begins as he flees Washington and heads south through Maryland and eventually Virginia. Secretary of War Stanton takes charge of the manhunt and the entire resources of the government are thrown into the chase.
The in-depth details of all sides of this incredible adventure are fantastic as we see both Booth's mistakes and those of his pursuers. The details of Booth's near capture and death are also quite amazing and a bit touching.
If you read this book you will just be amazed at at what you learn. One new thing I learned that surprised me was the involvement of Dr. Mudd, the physician who fixed Booth's broken leg two nights after the assassination. Mudd, who I always thought was a innocent victim (thanks to the 1936 Movie, "Prisoner of Shark Island)and was sent to Shark Island Prison for a few years for his part. It turns out that Mudd knew Booth fairly well, and although he was not part of the assassination conspiracy, he was part of a previous plot to kidnap Lincoln. He also lied to federal troops about Booth when he was questioned.
I heartily recommend this book to anyone who loves history, and for that matter, to anyone who loves a whopping good story!!"
"Swanson's telling of the manhunt for Booth is an engaging and informative read. I am not a Civil War buff usually, and I was still entertained and even piqued in my interest of the topic.
I agree with other reviewers that you need to possess an appetite for minutiae as the author leaves very little of his research off the final product. Readers are informed of such things as the tailor of Lincoln's suit, the menu of foodstuffs that was brought to Booth as he hid in the woods in Maryland, and other such details.
The book is heavy with actual quotes, letters, news articles, and diary entries and filled in by the author's (somewhat gratuitous at times) digressions into artistic imagination to fill in the blanks. I would emphasize that the effort of the author is to give the play-by-play more than it is to provide analysis though.
Bottomline: A lively, accessible, and informative read on what happened after one of the most famous events in American history."
"I read this book because Newsweek said it reads like an adventure story. Well, it doesn't. It reads more like a history book with lots of detail. I did enjoys it, however, since I have an interest in anything that happened during or around the Civil War times. I didn't really know anything about John Wilkes Booth, how popular an actor he was, or that he led a group of conspirators who had been plotting to kidnap Lincoln before. I didn't realise Booth was considered a hero by many Confederate sympathizers, who coveted busts and protraits of him. I didn't know that his group was also supposed to kill the Vice President and the Secretary of State at the same time as the assassination. The Vice President wasn't harmed, but Seward was attacked, along with two of his sons and a guard, but he wasn't killed. There are a lot of interesting facts in the book, but you do have to go through a lot of detail to get to them."
