"Margaret Werner's father was one of 450 Ford employees who went to work in what was thought to be the new Russian Utopia. Once there, passports were confiscated and lives brutalized. It is a touching story of endurance told by her son as a tribute to his mother."
"This book is really great, well written. The main thing I've gotten out of this book, is that it makes me grateful to live in America, and to have the freedoms I do. Its a pretty heavy read, as it is about a concentration camp. I don't think anyone who hasn't read "Hiding Place" could read this. Theres some stuff I wouldn't recomened to anyone under, oh...13 maybe."
"Margaret Werner's father, Carl, was offered an opportunity to join approx. 450 fellow Ford Auto employees in operating a new manufacturing plant in Gorky, Russia. Despite desperate pleas on Margaret and her mother Elisabeth's parts to stay in America, Carl decided to move the family from Detroit to Gorky.
The family lived under harsh conditions from the get-go. But the real hell begins for the family when Carl is arrested on false charges, and then a few years later Margaret is also arrested and ultimately sentenced to ten years of hard labor in the Gulag. Margaret's experiences in the Gulag are the focus for most of the story.
Margaret's son, Karl, writes the book. I found her story quite compelling. Had that been the entire book, I would have found her story very satisfying and would have given it four stars.
However, the author strays away from the premise of the book near the end in a chapter entitled, "Challenge to the Reader," where he rants about the importance of truth and veers off on a religious tirade, with entries such as, "When will we wake up and realize that, not so unlike Stalinist Russia, our godless (otherwise known as progressive) liberal organizations and faithless media moguls have an agenda." He lost me right there. I felt his unfounded and misplaced blame did not belong in this book. Had this chapter not been cleverly disguised in the back of the book, I probably would not have purchased it. His diatribe made me question how much of Margaret's story was really true and how much was fabricated in order for Karl to spew his garrulous venom under the guise of "truth."
Mr. Tobien, if you're going to write a book about your religious views then do that, but don't sneak them into the back of this book about a very different subject."
