"This book is my introduction to Fannie Flagg as an author, and I can't recall when I read such a delightful book! Ms. Flagg has written a charming, sprightly, totally enjoyable story about the quirky residents of Elmwood Springs, MO. Having lived in a couple of small towns in my life, I could appreciate one of the major points of this book -- how rapidly news can spread in a small community.
I won't go into the plot, because it is such fun to discover what is on the next page! I will leave my review at the point of recommending it to anyone and everyone who loves people (and books!) and to state that I am going to get hold of her earlier books about this community: Standing in the Rainbow,/i> and Welcome to the World, Baby Girl,/i>! I can't wait to read them!"
"Delightful novel full of southern humor and charm. Flagg writes about the small town America where you wished you were raised. Elner Shimfissle is picking figs when she falls. The novel unfolds as Elner's neighbors and family members react to the news of her demise and her surprising recovery. It makes you realize how much impact we have on the people around us. Not all characters and stories are equally enagaging and one wasn't needed at all (the handy man). Made me laugh and cry and when I finished I felt I was saying goodbye to old friends."
"This book is probably a 3 star but I'm giving it 4. I want this kind of place to exist in small town America; a place filled with friendly neighbor ladies who take care of each other and anyone else they meet. A place where kind words and actions make cranky, selfish people mend their ways. This story is sweet, humorous, and easy to read (and perhaps a tad too long). I also loved Fannie Flagg's ideas about what heaven will be like. Hint: the experience will be tailored to the individual and include their fondest dreams; God will be their favorite person in life. A fun summer read..."
"This was a Book Club selection for the fall in our group, but was pulled because of objections to some of the language. I read it anyway and loved it! What a wonderful twist and perspective on heaven, what it will be like in our experience there, and such delightful characterization. I would highly recommend it, especially for summer reading. I read it at the same I read The Last Lecture and found that its insights added to the beautifully-written story of a dying man's thoughts. The two books bonded together beautifully and paired this experience of our mortality together in some wonderful common threads."
