"This was a satisfying conclusion to a great series. I think all three of the books start off a bit slowly and it takes a couple of chapters to get things rolling. However, once the story begins to unfold it's packed with adventure. There were several surprises in this book as once again there are some magicians plotting to overthrow the government. Once again you'll find yourself trying to decide if you like Nathaniel and Bartimeaus. They are imperfect characters who you love to hate, and then you find yourself feeling sorry for them. Stroud does a great job of playing with your emotions. I think this is a series that I would like to own, so I'll have to keep my eyes open for a great deal."
"The British government is currently controlled by magicians trained at an early age to summon spirits as slaves. They are cruel and power hungry struggling with a revolution in the American colonies and the protests and uprisings of commoners back home. Among the ministers sits John Mandrake a young, determined minister who thinks only of himself and his work. Kitty Jones is a commoner and a former member of a rebellious organization the Resistance. Caught in the tangle is Bartimaeus, a djinni, a spirit of the Other Place in the service of John Mandrake, but with a special knowledge, John's birth name, Nathaniel. John has pushed Bartimaeus to the end of his endurance, binding his poor essence far too long to this Earth but John has one last assignment for him. Bartimaeus must locate a man by the name of Hopkins with only his lead, Jenkins. Bartimaeus stealthy follows Jenkins but by a trick of fate triggers an alarm as he learns of Hopkins. He is forced to return to Mandrake spilling much of his essence and nearly killing himself in the process. Mandrake dismisses Bartimaeus in order to save his servant and his information. After a summoning by Kitty then again by Mandrake Bartimaeus is sent to arrest Hopkins but this reveals a sinister truth, Hopkins's body is housing Bartimaeus's long time rival Farqual. Soon Hopkins and his accomplice overtakes the government. Mandrake and Kitty are taken hostage and witness as djiinni are summoned into the bodies of magicians and take over the city. Mandrake sheds his adopted name and reveals himself as Nathaniel. Nathaniel dismisses Bartimaeus and goes to capture the most powerful weapon in the empire, the staff of Gladstone. While Nathaniel tries for the Staff, Kitty sits and summons herself into the Other Place with the help of Bartimaeus. This act had not been succeeded since Ptolemy of Egypt and symbolized great trust in Bartimaeus. After getting the staff Nathaniel, Kitty, and Bartimaeus concoct a plan to defeat the djinni human hybrids. Bartimaeus enters the body of Nathaniel but instead of controlling him they find a balance of power and head out to conquer the city. Together they defeated all but one djinni, which will only fall if all of the power of the staff is released. Only Bartimaeus's power holds the staff in tact and to release it Nathaniel dismisses Bartimaeus and destroys himself in the processes. Both Kitty and Nathaniel's actions forged in Bartimaeus an unbreakable bond of trust. The only other human to share that bond is Ptolemy who also visited the Other Place and dismissed Bartimaeus at his end. In troubled times they formed a deep connection of trust that comes only with great acts of faith in one another. They showed the ability to balance and have faith in the other by sharing one body. Everyone has the capacity to trust and love but many only after great acts of faith. I rated this book five stars because it balance creative humor, complex plot, and deep themes of trust and love that weaves a touching tale of heroism and adventure."
"Three years since foiling yet another attempt on the government, Nathaniel is now a high ranking government official, in charge of propaganda supporting the ongoing war in America. Kitty has taken on a new identity and is trying to continue her fight against the magicians by learning more about djinnis. Bartimaeus, meanwhile, has been put into permanent use by Nathaniel, who is scared to dismiss him, because he thinks Bartimaeus will be summoned by another magician and will tell the magician Nathaniel's birthname, giving that person ultimate power over Nathaniel. Unfortunately for Baritmaeus, this means his essence is slowly deteriorating, from being on the earth for so long. So when Nathaniel asks him to take on a particularly dangerous assignment, Bartimaeus may be too weak to handle it. But if Kitty, Nathaniel, and Bartimaeus, despite being seemingly inherently opposed to each other, can join their resources, they may just be able to at last unravel the mystery of all of the plots of the preceding years, and possibly end the conflict between humans and spirits once and for all."
"So, I think my advice would be don't even start the series. The reader is great and the long books helped entertain on long runs, but the overall experience was not worth the frustration. The final book was somewhat redeeming, but to wait three very LONG books for Nathaniel to become a decent character is asking too much. On top of that, he dies without even kissing Kitty. Where is the justice (or romance) in that? I suppose it was the only acceptable ending. Nathaniel had been such a twerp the entire time the only way to redeem himself was dying while saving the world. Setting Bartimaeus free was an appropriate touch, but it wasn't a truly victorious or happy ending. Just not quite worth it for me."
