"This book was great! I'm not the pushy, in your face kind of person who can follow others around looking for attention. So when I started I was not sure I was going to appreciate the info in this book. But the author really put his methods in a great perspective. He drills in to the message that you shouldn't be shamelessly hassling people to do things for you, but instead offering your services to that person and trying to build a strong recipricative relationship with that person. In the final chapters he stresses the need to be innovative and to step outside the box, and this really struck a nerve with me. The next day I tried to look at my work in this new creative light and I had a major breakthrough on an up-and-coming technology that I can incorporate into my work to make it more productive. I definitely recommend this book to anyone willing to keep an open mind and further thier carreers, be they big or small careers."
"I picked this up because of some of the great reviews I've seen and because it's about networking which is an area I can improve in.
Overall it was really good and I picked up a couple ideas of ways I can improve. The main thing I got out of the book was that relationships are really more important than we realize. In the individualistic, digitally entertained version of America we live in, this is an important point to bring up.
The writing is lacking in a couple of ways. Some of the chapters, especially those near the end, feel thrown together or added for no reason. It could be about 100 pages shorter and be just fine. Another interesting thing is he talks about how 'self-help' won't ever work. We need to help each other out, learn from each other, and such. However, I would classify this book as a self-help book."
"The title of this book is what captured my attention. The passion with which it was written captured my enthusiasm. The author, Keith Ferrazzi, is a marketing expert and networking fanatic. If you only do half of the things that he does in this book, you will dramatically increase your networking skills.
The underlying message, and a repetitive theme of this book, is that networking is not about getting; it's about giving - giving people what they need to succeed. In doing so, he believes that you build solid relationships that will be both beneficial and rewarding. He doesn't just give advice, he gives you detailed instruction while offering real-life examples of how he befriended prominent, well-respected and accomplished business leaders in the process.
Many of these relationships were instigated, enhanced, or solidified over a meal - during which time he could fervently express his hunger to help another succeed; thus the creation of the title. It's a great concept, a winning formula and the best book I've ever read on networking. Buy it today!"
"Probably one of the few networking books I'll read. Ferrazzi is well qualified to write about this subject because of the incredible network he's built for himself (assuming all his stories are true).
The standout points for me were:
1. Always bring something to the table. Your relationship needs to be mutually beneficial.
2. Don't think about it as "networking"--establish real, sincere relationships with people.
3. Be outgoing--have parties, talk to people, make phone calls, remember birthdays.
4. Write down and remember things about people. There was a great story about Bill Clinton early on writing down things to remember about everyone he met.
Good read. A little long, maybe, and scattered in parts, but I thought it was a great overview of what a master relationship-builder does."
