"Although the famously reclusive Harper Lee did not authorize the book, Shields provides a sympathetic and balanced portrayal of the author. Similarities between her family history in Monroeville, Alabama and the fictional Finch clan of Maycomb, Alabama are shown, including paternal role model A.C. Lee's transformation into the hero of Atticus. Other influences include childhood friend Truman Capote, a high school English teacher, and her dedicated agent and editor. Lee may have had trouble fitting in with her peers in school, but she managed to gather a supportive group of friends and advocates who were instrumental in the success of her only book.
At times this almost 300 page work seems padded with a few too many details about people and events on the periphery, but Shields handles the fluff with an artist's touch and eventually gets down to business in addressing the important topics of what happened to that second novel she claimed to be working on for so long and why she retreated to her hometown in Alabama."
"Called "A portrait of Harper Lee" by the author, I would call this: "A portrait of Harper Lee, but not the details people really care about", but that's me. Honestly, it seems to be a little bit more about Truman Capote than his friend Nelle Harper Lee. Personally, I would have liked to spend a little less time in the novel talking about her time helping Capote with "In Cold Blood" I also thought that there was too much talk about the people that surrounded Lee.
I was interested in the little details about the similarities between Lee's childhood and the world of Maycomb she portrays in the novel; and the looks into the reasons that she did not write a second novel, but I also somewhat disapprove of the fact that the book was written directly against Harper Lee's wishes."
"Lots of background information about the research which Nelle did for Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" which he does not acknowledge in his book's dedication. Charles Shields writes about Nelle Harper Lee after much research and interviews with family and friends who knew her. Very interesting that she never published another book and the insight we gain from Shields examination of why not. I would, like so many others, love to meet and talk with her. He does paint a masterpiece of why Miss Lee has been so private and content with the success of her first and only novel and gives the reader a respect for her privacy and choosing the lifestyle which suited her. I wish I had her gift for words and story-telling at its highest level."
"I read "To Kill A Mockingbird" as a teenager then decided to re-read it a couple years ago. You have such a different perspective as a senior citizen compared to a teenager! I then wanted to know more about Harper Lee and found this biography. I became even more interested in her and when my husband and I were traveling in our motorhome, we visited Monroeville, Alabama. It still is a small town with the courthouse in the middle of the town square. Harper Lee is still alive and lives there but the citizens of Monroeville are very protective of her. The courthouse is now a museum but looks exactly like the one in the movie although they did not film the movie there. In the gift shop of the courthouse/musem, the young lady who worked there asked me if I was a fan of Harper Lee, the book (TKAM), the film or Truman Capote (he spent a large portion of his childhood there). I said "all of the above". She obviously loved where she worked and discussing Monroeville's favorite daughter. She also said that Lee's great-niece was her best friend. Obviously, her enthusiasm worked on me as I ended up buying 8 books and only one had to do with Harper Lee (Monroeville, The Search for Harper Lee's Maycomb, an OK book). All the rest had to do with Truman Capote, but that is another subject. When talking with this enthusiastic young lady, she asked me if I had read a bioraphy of Harper Lee. I said I had and when she asked which one, she was NOT amused that this was the one I had read. She felt the author had come to Monroeville and had just used them to get whatever he could for his book. I told her that I had really enjoyed the book and it was what had inspired me to visit Monroeville, Alabama - a visit that is still a treasured memory."
