"I thought this was incredible. It didn't just give the stories of the fighter pilots, which was fascinating in itself. It also gave history for the entire second World War. I didn't get the sense that it was at all biased toward the Unites States, though it was written by an American citizen. Rather, it seemed to be open and honest and truthful, luring you in with the sometimes graphic, sometimes disturbing truth, so disturbing that at times, I felt ashamed to be a US citizen. The US is not perfect and never has been. The courage of the fighter pilots, however, was remarkable, admirable. I'm not sure that young men in today's modern world would hold such courage when put to the same tests. I think everyone should read this, because I didn't just come away from it with a better sense of our own history, but also with a better sense and understanding of the whole WWII era."
"This book probably deserves a higher rating as it is well written. Yet it was only given three stars because for some reason this book just didn't work for me. I kept having to put it down and read something else for awhile. I've read many thrillers and books on Vietnam so the brutality and canabalism was not shocking...just depressing (sic). Maybe it was just the comparison of the Japanese expansion and the conquering of the American west that just doesn't work for me. Especially when you consider a large portion of land was obtained through the Louisiana Purchase and not through war."

"I great look into America expansioninsm and treatment of a non-Western pwer as a result of conflicting desires in the Pacific. How this led to war with Japan and how the Japanese mindset during the war was exhibited and developed before being sent out to China, Singapore, Guam, etc. The American mindset was nearly identical only a couple years earlier in wiping out full Philipino populations. Both sides viewed the other side as not human but "Other". This led to the gruesome acts on Chichi Jima resulting in the deaths of 6 (maybe 7) Flyboys there shot down during the war. The japanese mindset regarding fliers and how the damage reaked by these fliers was not often the "precision bombing" it claimed. Although none of the men killed on Chichi were involved in carpet and fire bombing of Japanese cities, revenge was taken on them for the US's actions. Worth a read to understand the WWII Pacific theatre."
