"An interesting "biography" of a rarity - a female neurosurgeon. Non-medical folk will enjoy the details of the journey and obstacles women still face in this male-dominated field. It made for a quick read but I think my own profession probably tainted my enjoyment of the novel - it might be better for nonsurgeons."
"This is a favorite. I like non-fiction and reading about all things medical. I read this, at the time, because a close friend was doing her medical residency in a male-dominated surgical field and I wanted to know what that experience was like. Found it fascinating. I read it two years later when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and still liked it (but paid a lot more attention the second read around). Excellent book if you enjoy reading about the medical field. Dr. Firlik writes in a conversational tone that pulls the reader into her world, but never sounds condescending."
"I have a whole new appreciation for the human head and it's anatomy. Plus, Katrina Firlik does a does a superlative job of introducing the world of neurosurgery to the lay person, with the added twist of the female surgeon's perspective. Some vivid stories of patients that I won't forget anytime soon. Loved this book, and its take on the mystery that is the human brain."
"Perhaps it's not fair to rate a book after reading only the first chapter, but I had to put this one down. I wanted to enjoy it, but it was just poorly written. It seemed forced, with too much ego and casual language. Not compelling at all. The same experiences told by a better writer would probably have resulted in a far more captivating read. (I also admit I can't stand seeing authors on the covers of their own books. Get over yourself, or hire someone else to design your book jacket.)"
