"This is a good one in the mystery/thriller genre. It moves right along and carries you with it. The characters are a bit one-dimensional but hey, why complicate things? The hero is heroic, his pyscho sidekick is truly a nut case, his girlfriend is shallow, the bad guys are bad, the cops are tough. Its sort of comforting actually. :) And while some of the characters are predictable, the story is interesting with a few twists and turns to keep you wondering."
"This was the second Harlan Coben book I found at the library. Even though it is #8 in the Myron Bolitar series, I didn't feel that I had missed anything by not first reading the previous 7 (although, I am on the search for them). The characters are all well developed, and the story line was gripping. Again, Mr. Coben knows how to spin a tale. Can't wait to read the rest of his stuff!"
"Very reminiscent of a Travis McGee novel. I loved the tone and the do-gooder protagonist who relies on a cast of colorful and efficient friends.
The plot falls apart under simple scrutiny. This is the story of a man investigating the disappearances of two girls--both over 18, both from the same high school in the same small New York town. The big connection between the girls that catches the eye of to the police and Myron Bolitar--the protagonist--is that both girls withdrew money from the same Manhattan ATM on the nights they disappeared.
The ATM seems pretty coincidental, but throughout the novel we are told again and again that it's too big to have been coincidental.
Another distraction came in the way convoluted twists at the end. By the end of "Promise Me," twists are raining down from the sky like puzzle pieces in a game of Tetris, getting harder and harder to fit together.
Overall, I really liked the book. Until the two-thirds mark I wondered if I would give it four or five stars, by the end it was a question of three or four. Sadly, the final twist made my decision for me.
That said, I am anxious to read more of Coben's novels. He is clearly a fine storyteller. I was completely drawn in by Bolitar and his friends and fully expect to hand out a few more stars in future reviews."
"This is the first Coben novel that I have read. Apparently Myron Bolitar is an established and loved Coben character. I did like this book and will seek out more in the series, and more Harlan Coben novels. I read the book on a flight back to Seattle from Chicago. It was just about the right length for the flight--I finished it after crawling into bed at 12:55 p.m."
