"A basically good plot and story idea but written by a very mediocre writer. There were a lot of statements, descriptions, and lines that seemed out of place in their format from the rest of the story. That being said, it did not take away much from the plot. The plot was actually a very interesting one, albeit a bit generic. However, this is also made up for by the originality of the reserves the two characters have about falling in love, since they are of different and sometimes warring species. The story does fall off a bit after they get toghether. We are supposed to care about Lachlain's character (the Scottish male werewolf) and him wanting his revenge against the vampires for chaining him for years. Yet, I just didn't care much about him at all outside of his relationship with Emma. But Emma herself is a very likeable character, and it's great seeing her grow in her own skin as the book goes on."
"Wow I thought this was pretty bad. I know I am in the minority but I found the plot was really thin. The I felt all the characters were incredibly "thick"(except Bove)esp. Emma & her family. IMO, There are far better paranormal "romance" books. I just didn't connect w/the characters at all nor the author's justifications for their actions.
Basically the book followed the Romance formula authors are forced to follow by their publishers to a T:
Sexually experienced to the hilt, hung like a horse Alpha Male meets his true Virginal mate (or vice versa - apparently, these men are just as surprised at I am they these woman are still virgins.
One of them is reluctant & fights the attraction usually believe something not true about the person, about 50% through the book is when something sexual happens - so they either have sex for the 1st time OR something big sexually happens but they don't have sex.
If they don't have sex @ the 50% mark - more misunderstanding high-jinks ensue until about 70-79% When the deed is actually done.
At 80% the big bad starts to be dealt with. By 90% is being confronted & by 95-100% the author ties up the happy ending.
In this book - The main character is an insecure, whiny, spoiled, cruel, shrew. The man is very Alpha & grunts his speech 1/2 the time but he is a hell of a lot better than her & her insane family. The plot is lame & the the formula is dog tired.
The worst part is that the man actually from the beginning tries to find out about her & explain himself & she won't hear it. The author's excuse "she's secretive" & "she wants to protect her family" - from what I don't know b'c their lethal - it's just all a series of excessively dumb assumptions.
I suppose I would say this is really technically "paranormal romance" & that's that.
I don't recommend unless the person is a hardcore romance junkie."
"I've been waiting and waiting for the chance to start this series. Alas, I was not as taken with it as I had hoped to be. I am not immune to erotic fiction, and I certainly love paranormal tales, but not like this. The first half of the book with it's hatred, denigration and imagined rape scenarios really just left me cold. I did, however, hang with it and eventually enjoyed the story once the main female character became less little girl in peril and more butt-kicking, self-confident woman. And I began to thaw toward the main male character, though I thought his character progression was not very skillfully handled--it seemed to skip some steps that made it seem even less likely a thing than the story line was allowing anyway. Let's just say I'm still not swooning to be his any time soon--Emma can keep him. And what really galled me throughout the book was the Valkrie characters, women who had pretty much every bad stereotype that's ever been pinned on a female: screeching, over-bearing, irrational, insane, covetous, materialistic and distractable by shiny things. Give me a freaking break! For supposedly ferocious warriors, they seemed more like comic relief. Bad comic relief. I own the second book in the series (violating my "try it before you buy all of it" rule somewhat), and may give Cole one last try, but I'm not going to be in any hurry to do so."
"I LOVED this book. Plain and simple. I've always had a thing for forbidden romance and accents, and Kresley Cole delivered both beautifully. Lachlain MacReive was EXTREMELY well written as the tortured (for a hundred and fifty years, less) Lykae king who was only able to break free of his holds due to smelling his mate above ground.
A mate who happened to be half Valkyrie and half vampire... a species (the vampire) who were his captives.
Emma was totally believable in her walking in both worlds but belonging in none station in life. She started out as timid, curious, trying to fit in for awhile. In Paris to find out about her father, she actually gets tracked down by a crazed Lachlain and then the fun really begins.
I love the journey the two take together in order to better understand each other. And on a completely different note, Nix was just sheer genius in this one. I loved her."
