Description: New. From the Beatles' recording engineer Geoff Emerick comes a fascinating memoirfeaturing never-before-told stories of the Fab Four. read more
"This is a great read. I am a huge music fan, and with this book, Geoff Emerick brings insights about The Beatles' studio recording sessions. Emerick writes with an unassuming and humble style but pulls no punches when it comes to describing his opinions and perspective. This is an excellent companion piece if you have been swept up into the Beatlemania resurgence that has come with the release of the mono/stereo re-masters of their albums. There are certainly more thorough books out there that cover every single song ever recorded by the Fab Four, but this one is a real treat coming from the man that shaped the sounds heard on the Beatles' albums."
"If you are at all excited about the remastering of the Beatles albums, this is a must-read. Check out articles about the event on CNN or in The New York Times; none mention that Emerick was the man who made most of those sonic innovations on records like REVOLVER, SGT. PEPPER'S, and THE WHITE ALBUM possible. Emerick began working with the Beatles in what would become known as Abbey Road studios while in his early teens--got the job thanks to a school guidance counselor! The two best things the book has to offer are intriguing insights into how famous effects were achieved (often by sheer ingenuity in using whatever was on hand--a great teaching metaphor) and a counter-to-conventional-wisdom sizing-up of the Fab Four as individuals.
"As a fan of the Beatles, this book provided a great deal of insight into their recordings. In our digital age, where most things can now be done with the click of a mouse, you can really appreciate all the work and ingenuity that George Martin, and especially Geoff Emerick put into the recordings, and their influence in the sound of the greatest rock and roll band in history. Reading this book will make you want to go back and listen to the Beatles catalog with a careful ear."
"Priceless treasure trove of Beatles engineering, musical, psychological, and gossipy tidbits, written by the greatest engineer of pop music, who was instrumental in creating Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, and Abbey Road. Also a great window into the Abbey Road recording culture of the 60s and recording history in general. He comes off as an amiable guy with excellent ears, good will, and a great memory. None of the Beatles escape quite unscathed, but it's nice to see them described as normal moody human beings, and besides, Emerick clearly is bursting with admiration for them.. really brings the music back to life no matter how many times you've heard it, and makes you feel the excitement that was in the studio as they made music history -- especially the chapters on Sgt. Pepper's, which I still adamantly argue (against the 'Revolverist' revisionists) was the Beatles' creative peak--and probably the peak pop album of all time, yes, which sadly puts me in agreement with the totally annoying boomer bible, Rolling Stone. Good companion books: The Beatles Recording Sessions (I think it's called that, by Lewisohn & Emerick), and that huge fat catalog of all the Beatles recording gear and how it was used."
