"Yep, L. (2006). The earth dragon awakes. New York: Harper Collins.
Summary: A fictionalized account of a true event, told from the viewpoint of 8-year-old Henry (Caucasian) and his friend, 9-year-old Chin (Chinese-American) as they experience the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. This powerful story is based on historical facts and accounts. The layout of the story jumps from chapter to chapter between the two protagonists' viewpoints, which can get a little confusing at times (especially when it becomes one page per chapter!). The boys believe the "heroes" they read about in comic books encompass what they aspire to be, yet after experiencing the massive destruction and horror of the earthquake, both boys learn that there are true heroes much closer to home. The Afterward contains facts and figures from the San Francisco Earthquake as well as Lawrence Yep's own connection to this natural disaster that changed the city in the spring of 1906. There is also a section of "Selected Reading" and historical photos (with captions) of the destruction.

Curriculum Connection: * Earth Science in 4th grade: a must-read for students "investigating the changing earth" (Jeffco science unit #3, connected to 4.1E Colorado standard): "students learn that the surface of the Earth is constantly changing by natural processes and by the actions of people." Students can model how the earthquake came about using manipulatives.
