From Publishers Weekly: "Thirty million men and women served in the Red Army during WWII. Over eight million of them died. Living or dead, they have remained anonymous. "This was a great perspective on the war that we typically don't see in the West. After the fall of the Soviet Union the authors made a great effort to interview as many veterans as possible, some of whom were free to speak about their experiences for the first time in ~60 years.
Its sometimes easy to overlook the fact that these peasants & conscripts had been holding back the Wehrmacht for 3 years by the time we landed at Normandy, usually under conditions that we can hardly imagine. This book focuses on the soldier's experiences, not the Generals or the grand strategies of war."
"man alive, the russians really took it in the teeth.
It is hard to appreciate the sheer volume of devastation and the depth of bureaucratic incompetence ---but Merridale does a good job of putting a human face on the numbers and creating a vivid portrait of the war from their side of the fence.
The lessons go well beyond don't invade russia in the winter and explain a lot about the reoccurring issues in Russian politics."
