"This was the worst book I've read in years. Hated it. Narrator was very narcissistic and annoying. Writing was amateurish. Maybe it reads better in the original French."
"This was written beautifully but had an ugly story. How uncomfortable to look down on, laugh at, the absolutist narrator, who kept trying and failing to know the world around him, especially the woman in the title, and then *bam* realize how like him I am. I kept thinking: what an awful person, placing others into his own (always wrong) easy tropes, assuming their inner thoughts, their motivations, "knowing" and even dreading their next move. I found his this tension relevant on a number of levels including my own post-9/11 (and post-youth?) dread of snark and the search for spiritual rebirth. I cannot easily put my finger on my own responses to this book -- ha! how little we know -- but The Woman Who Waited kept me surprised, denying me the satisfaction of defining and predicting it. I am bumping this up from three stars to four because I appreciate the ongoing challenge of this read."
"this story made me think a bit differently about a past personal relationship, while also stimulated a vision of difficulties in the fallout of eastern social-political conflict entirely foreign to me."
