"When I gave my junior class the choice of any book by Ted Dekker to read, they overwhelmingly chose House, perhaps because the movie had just come out and everyone was talking about seeing the movie, but I like to think they chose House because it is Dekker's best. And that is difficult to say with so many excellent novels. Peretti and Dekker together have created a suspenseful, action/horror adventure with decidedly Christian themes. The book has some adult content, but is suitable for high school students. The book grabs you and does not let go. Two glowing recommendations from the class: no one turned the book in to me for extra credit and they all agreed, "The book is way better than the movie." Their words, not mine."
"I found this book to be merely okay. I guess I hoped for more or thought it would be a bit different. I've never really read the horror genre so I'm probably not the best person to judge this book. When reading reviews of this book I noticed very mixed feelings. Some loved it. Others hated it. Some thought it scary or disgusting. Others thought that instead of scary it was laughable and not it a good way. At one point I thought it was going to actually be frightening in a brooding sort of way but somehow it came off as too unbelievable. I realize that the writers couldn't go too far with the blood or actual "horror" considering their target audience were Christians (like myself) that would probably buy the book at a Bible book store (I actually borrowed my copy from the library - fortunately). Still I was hoping for more somehow. A good moral to the story in the end (as expected) but while I'm glad I read House I can't see myself reading it a second time."
"House is a great book filled with a great story that delivers where it counts. It is intense, visceral, and creepy. Personally, I consider Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti are masters of the suspense/horror genre and they truly deliver in this novel. I never really knew what to expect from one chapter to the next and couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happens. My only draw back with this novel is that there was no sequel; probably couldn't even be one but it was that good. I just wanted more. Intense, creepy, visceral, and well written. Great late night read."
"House definitely belongs in my Top 10. it was action packed, suspenseful and had a great plot. it's one of Dekker's best (i haven't read any of Frank Perretti's books so i can't really say anything) stories he's ever written. if you like a book that gets your heart racing and your spine tingling then House is the book for you. basically what it's about is two couples who have their tires slashed by some murderer name Barsiduous White or the Tin Man. they walk through the woods until they happen upon a cozy little inn welcoming weary travelers. they walk in and meet the other couple and in a little while a tin can is tossed in through the chimney with rules written on it. (1. God came into my house and i killed him. 2. i will kill anyone who comes into my house like i killed God. 3. Give me one dead body by sunrise and i might let rule #2 slide.) these rules make no sense yet they must be followed. the game is driving everyone insane. everyone wants to kill the other to save their own skins. they don't know who to trust and the worst part is they can't get out of the game (or the house) untill someone wins. (less)"
