Somewhere along the line, the Age of Reason morphed into the Age of Emotion; this systemic erosion is costing time, money, jobs, and lives in the ...

"A non-fiction book recommended by my brother-in-law, who is using it to teach his graduate students (at USU) critical thinking. The ideas were interesting, but it was long and didn't hold my interest as much as I thought it might. It did reference several other books I had read: "Blink", "Emotional Intelligence", "The Closing of the American Mind", but the author often disagreed with them. I do agree that critical thinking has gone "out of style" and is really needed now more than ever."
"I agree with the premise of this book, which is that we can't allow critical thinking to fall by the wayside, which it is in danger of doing in America today. This is a counterpoint to Malcolm Gladwell's paean to snap decisions and gut reactions, "Blink." However, both methods have their merits of course, and it seems the best course of thought is a sensible combination of the two. Full disclosure: I have not as of this writing read Gladwell's tome. Content here is good-overview of critical thinking and reason, discussions of the effects of TV, child-rearing, and famous thinkers-but the author's choice to read his own work is a bad one. His voice is dull and his enunciation is dismal, resulting in "gender" repeatedly sounding like "ginger," "deterioration" sounding like "deteriation," and the unfortunate "nucular." It all makes some of the information difficult to comprehend. Having listened to "In Defense of Food" immediately previously, I am now less critical of Scott Brick's over-grand voice performance in that audiobook."
"This is about how crucial decisions can't be made that quickly, in that you have to think before you make them, which would be the opposite of just following your gut."
"this is a befitting answer to blink! (which BTW i did not agree with entirely). riveting analysis of the lack of logical thinking and mental laziness that abounds in the world in general and america in particular."
