"Book 6 of 7, and I'm nearly done with the story of the Dark Tower. It felt like I got through this one in no time at all, and I guess that's the sign of a better book. This volume didn't quite have the excitement of Wolves Of The Calla, but it was tightly plotted with some great moments. Roland and Eddie's gunfight at the general store was a highlight, as was the introduction of Stephen King himself as a character. I really enjoyed reading the journal at the end. Any insight into a writer's process, real or imagined, is fascinating to me. But... these books sprawl so incredibly far that it gets intimidating. They cover so much ground in such a short space of time that I can barely keep up. The constant new terminology, new concepts and new plot threads make it difficult for me to immerse myself which, with a story this long and this fantastic, is all I really want to do."
"I started this book with my expectations relatively low. The prior book in the series was good, but unnecessarily long, and I was beginning to lose a bit of my enthusiasm for the overall progression of storyline and characters. In addition, this was the lowest rated book of the entire series on both Good Reads and Amazon.
However, I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the sixth novel of the Dark Tower cycle. It was definitely a page turner, and I thought the plotting was much more concise than The Wolves of The Calla. Roland's gang is back on track to find the Dark Tower, and the reader clearly understands how the trials of each of the separated groups fit into the overall plot to save the collapsing Dark Tower. I also enjoyed the further exploration into the world(s)' mythology that Mia explains, as I feel nothing truly new about this aspect has been revealed since The Waste Lands.
It appears that the majority of the disdain for this book (and perhaps the last three in the series) stems from Steven King's self-introduced significance to the Dark Tower universe. However, I actually think it is a pretty clever idea, executed very well, and makes perfect sense in a cross-dimensional epic storyline that the author has been working on his whole career.
I can't wait to start the final book in the series, and I have not been this excited to continue since the head spinning ending of the first book."
"And this is where the series jumps the shark. I really think this book should not have been in the series. It was too long and with the rediculousness of Stephen King writing himself into his own book as being the storytell that must tell the most important story of all times, the story of The Dark Tower! I'm sorry, I will buy a lot when I am reading a story, but this just felt so cheap. If he would have at least changed the authors name it would have felt better, and we still would have known it was him.
That being said, I still love King's book, and this series, but this one really put a damper on my enjoyment."
"SOS finally provides some long awaited answers to long-standing questions in the DT series, but unfortunately, the book felt like it lacked conviction. I felt the first 5 books were packed with the conviction that Mr King was behind and involved in the writing. SOS, however, feels more like Mr King held the material at an arms length when he wrote it and is merely trying to get through the book rather than wrestling with it and engaging with the story and characters.
I could sit here and nitpick about other aspects (writing about himself as god for a whole chapter; avoiding Jake until the very last chapter; the confusion over who/what Mia really is; straying from the more linear/single track storytelling format Mr King went with in the past 5 books) but the truth of it is, I still enjoyed the book. Not as well as the some of the others, but it advances the story nicely, is a goodread (ahem), and sheds light on some key questions and themes."
