About this title: This gorgeous, sophisticated picture book focuses on Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks's bold refusal to surrender her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. A detailed portrait of Rosa's day on December 1, 1955, is presented, chronicling her long hours spent as a seamstress before leaving work early on account of her ill mother. Relieved to find a seat in the "neutral" section of the bus, where both blacks and whites could sit, Rosa's decision to stay seated even after the bus driver demanded she move sparked the historic, yearlong Montgomery bus boycott. "3-6 The illustrator of Rosa, Bryan Collier, does such an amazing job with his artwork! The people in the story have such a life like feel to them, which makes the reader easier to put themselves into the story. He also uses a vast array of colors, but the colors are slightly dark. I think the darkness of the colors puts a spin on the darkness of the story. Giovanni does a great job of recreating the story of Rosa Parks. She introduces her as a regular person to the reader, not just a historical figure. The author does this by introducing us to the characters of the book, a seamstress and a barber, etc. This book is very appealing to anyone interested in American history and culture. It has give a great representation of our past. History/Language Arts Students could use this book as a beginning to their Civil Rights Movement Unit or recreate the story as a play."
Collier's illustrations in Rosa contain a collage of paintings to create the effect of all the various moods this story delivers. There are a vast amount of dark tones with subtle light emerging from the image of Rosa Parks. Using distinct details in the faces of the characters and the background images, his paintings filled the entire page. Giovanni set the text apart in its own background, shaded only by color and set off to the side emphasizing the importance of the words by drawing the eye away from the busy illustrations to the plain text. Children are drawn to this story by the empowerment of standing up for what you believe in, justice, and common respect for others, as well as the need to be accepted.
History/LA: Create a poster on a person involved in the Civil Rights Movement."
"Grade Level: 3rd to 5th Grade Collier uses a rich palette of hues to depict the scenes from Rosa Parks' life. A combination of fine lines and deep hues paint the landscape of this civil rights advocate's life in a fashion that includes realism and also abstract imagery. Giovanni's text is great in amount, and tells a fascinating tale about this highly recognizable figure in civil rights history. She includes information that isn't widely known about this strong woman, and presents the information in a clear manner that allows the reader to connect with and admire Rosa. Related Content Areas: Social Studies, Language Arts Lesson Idea: Students will research more on Rosa Parks to put together a class report on this important historical figure."
"The art in Rosa had a lot of geometric shapes in it. I dont think that Collier was trying to make his illustrations realistic. I liked how in the illustrator's notes he mentions how he went to Mongomery and felt how hot it was, so he used a lot of yellow and dark hues so the reader could fell the heat. I think that the text is a lot more advanced than some of the other childrens picture books i have read, so i would think that the age level for this book would be between the grades of 4th and 6th grade. I would use this book in history class while discussing the civil rights movement."
