"My sister has raved about this book for years now. I never read it since our previous foster children didn't seem to have sleep issues. Now that we have a newborn and toddler and scheduling them can be difficult - I gave it a shot. Within days we had a better sleep schedule for both children! We didn't even realize the toddler had sleep issues. We were told he was just a handful, difficult, and extra cranky cause he didn't nap well. It was his 'personality'. Turns out he needed an earlier bedtime (very early, 6:45 pm) and a early nap (10:30-10:45 am). Now he falls asleep within 10 mins instead of 1 or 2 hours. He is also a much happier toddler.
The baby, we were told, had colic. It's why he would cry endlessly. Now that I tried some of the tips in the book he hardly cries at all! He is always happy and smiling. If he does cry a lot, I know he needs to get some sleep. He is now 4 months old and had 2-3 naps during the day and sleeps all through the night."
"I read this entire book, although it really is more of a "help yourself to whatever you need and go from there" type of book...I understand the concept, and in theory it works, but every child IS different and I truly believe you have to do what is right for you and your child.
I thin Marc is on the right track when it comes to the "sleep patterns" and making sure you recognize when your child is sleepy, and making sure you provide the adequate place for their sleep. It is very important for babies to sleep, it is detrimental to their development. He explains all of the reasons for doing so as well, his studies are very in-depth and descriptive, he even explains how to recognize your childs sleep patterns better.
I do however have a problem with the cry it out method, this has never worked for my daughter and as far as she is concerned...it never will. This is where I stop keeping pace with Marc Weissbluth, even though he is world renowned and Cindy Crawford swears by him, I am going to stick to my way - if it ain't broke, why fix it."
"Oh my goodness, If I could meet Dr. Weissbluth I would give him a huge hug and kiss and tell him thank you thank you thank you. This book was the answer to the one problem I most wanted solved - how do I get my new daughter to sleep! First, this book normalized our experience. In other words, this book showed us that what was going on with our daughter was normal and that a lot of people have a hard time with their child and sleep. Second, it educated us on what infant and newborn sleep should look like. Third, this book offered excellent, practical advice on how to help our daughter sleep. While she is still only a few months old as soon as we started the sleep training her naps and nighttime sleep began to improve and even if they would have on their own, what has the best is that this book taught us how to get her to sleep - something we were worried would be a lifelong battle is now one of the most pleasant parts of our days!!"
"I loved this book so much that after returning it to the library, I bought a copy of my own!
My daughter had gotten to a point where she would not fall asleep unless it was or or next to me. I couldn't put her down in her crib without her waking up and screaming. I read a few books - all that I could find time for with a fairly cranky daughter around - but nothing was really working. Everything else that I read seemed kind of theoretical. This book was full of science (not too much as to be overwhealming!) that helped me to know just how much sleep my daughter needed and to realized that the less sleep she got, the less sleep she would get. Sleep begets sleep, as the book says and I've found that to be SO TRUE! My daughter now has a regular nap and sleep schedule that follows the clock and her natural rhythms and she's doing wonderfully. She's well rested and happy and can actually fall asleep in her crib on her own! I never thought I would be one of those people writing the glowing reviews of my reformed problem sleeper but here I am! I would recommend this book to EVERY parent whether you are having sleep problems or not. It is extremely informational and so helpful."
