"I'm a big fan of the Library of America and was intrigued to see this (and it's companion volume covering the '50's) title released. I found it interesting that an organization that is, by their own description, "dedicated to preserving America's best and most significant writing" would choose to explore a style that was often the province of low-budget serials. It seems that the novels contained in this book are not examples of "America's best ... writing", at least in the conventional sense. The face that all of these novels were adapted for film at least once lends weight to the argument that they qualify as "significant writing".
All of the six novels held my interest, with "The Big Clock" and Nightmare Alley" being the high points for me. I was slightly put off by the casual racism that is present in the stories, although I'll allow that it is probably a reflection of the attitudes of an earlier time and that certain words have acquired a racist charge that may have been absent (or less pronounced) when they were written."
"I'm through the first four stories, and Horace McCoy's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Kenneth Fearing's The Big Clock have already earned it five stars. The Postman Always Rings Twice and Thieves Like Us are solid fours."
