"This was the first book recommended by our public library for a Book Club I chose to participate in through the library. What an amazing novel. It took me a bit to get into the story, but soon I could barely put the book down! It taught me a lot about what life was like a couple centuries ago! Very interesting and thought provoking!"
"Pre-Revolutionary War Satucket, Massachusetts captures the life of Lyddie, woman who loses her husband to the sea. She then experiences loneliness, anxiety, fatigue of struggling by herself. When her husband dies, all her property and rights are now in the hands of her nearest male relative: her daughter's husband. She challenges the both law and custom for control of her own life. This fight shows to be heartbreaking for Lyddie. Women in colonial times did not have the say in what is theirs after the passing of a spouse."
"I really enjoyed this book - the story of a widow in early America and how she exercised her freedom and strength through difficult and unpopular choices. I found myself getting angry at her son in law (who according to the mores of the time was bound to care for her as if she were property)and cheering Lyddie on as she chose to be independent, strong, and unconventional."
Pre-revolutionary War Saga. Lyddie's strength is amazing, as is her heart for Edward. I love the author's research and connections; this is "half" of Gunning's family story to a great degree.
I have read many books on the struggle of Jews, Blacks, Native American Indians, and other groups; however, this was a true "women's study" piece.
Favorite quote in the whole book - "'Tis the hardest part of life. . .to be half of something and yet remain whole." page 256
Perfect timing, as Mike and I leave for New England tomorrow!"
