Description: New. "A very solid, important and highly informative book. Norman Finkelstein provides extensive details and analysis, with considerable historical depth and expert research, of a very wide range of issues concerning Israel, the Palestinians, and the U. read more
"This title is worth reading, but there are much better books about Israel's misdeeds. This one has two problems in particular:
1) Too much emphasis on Alan Dershowitz. I understand that Dershowitz is powerful and very public, but there are better things on which to focus. Finkelstein claims that his feud with Dershowitz is unimportant and that only the issues matter, but the evidence shows otherwise. This book, for example. Or Finkelstein's website, which is filled with interpersonal snark that is more often childish than funny. Honestly, I see the Fink-Dersh feud as the antagonism of two American Jews with differing opinions. I'm much more interested in the viewpoints of Palestinians in the US and elsewhere who are doing the hard work of removing Israel's boot from the neck of Palestine.
2) Finkelstein relies exclusively on human rights reports, which are important sources. He treats them as infallible, though, and I think it would have been more effective had Finkelstein problematized them a bit. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, for instance, have ticked off Palestinians over and again; it's not methodologically prudent to simply ignore those human rights reports that convey inconvenient findings (however ridiculous or tendentious). Human rights groups, like all other organizations, are embedded in the same political and military conflicts they examine. Finkelstein's argument would have been much more interesting had he acknowledged and analyzed this fact."
"Great, especially for reference. It seems to me, though, that Finkelstein increasingly doesn't distinguish a Left critique of Zionism from a critique of Zionism in general."
