"Wow. I really enjoyed the journey of reading this book. The characters are so real. I like the aspect of it being based on real characters from the author's family history. This gave me a real glimpse of how strength is passed from mother to daughter through each generation. I find it interesting that the strength was discovered amidst the trials. Some were thought to be immune to trouble, but trouble came eventually, as it always does. I appreciated how Tademy remained true to life in demonstrating struggle and how to rise above it, rather than giving in to romantic ideas of fairytale land. Great book. I'm so glad I read it.
Side note: I still struggle with how different races are treated negatively. I acknowledge that I have differences from others, but I think it not right were I to be treated poorly because of those differences. I hope to treat those around me with kindness each day. Anything other than that approach should bring all of us a taste of disgust. The last chapter of this novel made me feel that disgust. How are we to judge someone's character so quickly? I think the illegal immigrants today are being treated in much the same way as the Tademy's family in this book. I hope we can all get over ourselves and treat others with respect and kindness. We cannot judge character so quickly as to make blanket statements about who should be where and have what rights. We're all people, that is all there is to it. There are 'good' and 'bad' in every race and status. Let's not be held guilty for treating others the way Antoine and his son treated Tademy's family, no matter how justified we feel. If you ever find my guilty, I hope you call me on it.
"A work of historical fiction focusing on the lives of 4 generations of women in Creole Louisiana, from the slave woman matriarch brought to Cane River from Virginia in 1820 to the early 20th century, with a brief epilogue in 1936. All but the first generation had children by white fathers--one by force, one by a coldly calculated relationship intended to benefit the children, & one by a long-term loving relationship hampered by ostracism & legal constraints. The special challenge of these mixed-race relationships is--along with the resources of family strength--the main focus of the book. Moderately engaging & somewhat didactic, with serviceable but not inspiring prose, it's worthwhile reading but not worthy of the enthusiastic recommendation it got from Oprah, Darlene, & my Mom."
"This book chronicles the story of four generations of women born into slavery along the Cane River in Louisiana. THis book is historical fiction based on the author, Lalita Tademy's own family. She depicts the endurance, and survival techniques the woman take to keep their family alive, the resulting blurring of racial boundaries and the "bleaching of the line" as first her daughter Suzette, then her granddaughter Philomene, and finally her great-granddaughter Emily choose (or are forcibly persuaded) to bear the illegitimate offspring of the area's white French planters. Very moving and thought provoking of the nature of race in the United States."
