"In two minds about this - the initial plot - finding out what happened in Edgar A Poe's mysterious few days before his death - that was intriguing, and the other plot - figuring out which was the real Dupin or whether both were imposters, and what happens to the "hero" of the novel - all linked well and kept me reading - to a point, then the details about Poe's last few days were reiterated in various forms so much for the last third of the book I ended up really not caring and being totally confused and bored by it all. Overkill I think sums it up, at the end. In fact, I skipped over the last couple of chapters just to check what hapens to the central character. Its a shame that the heavy handedness of the Poe "mystery" took over and ruined it for me. I know this author's most famous book is "The Dante Club" - not sure if the Poe book impels me to now go out and buy it - maybe not."
"I was hoping for a Dante's Club experience, which book was artfully inspired, with great historical detail that fit into that story seamlessly.
Poe Shadow seemed rather more like the author had a bunch of parts and characters and tried really hard to fit them into a story that never got really compelling or even all that interesting.
It might have been more interesting if the story was told from another character's perspective. I never did really buy the main character's motive for completely abandonning his work and fiancee in favor of upholding a dead man's honor.
The premise of a murder mystery setting starting from historical events is interesting, so I'll try his next book hoping for better plot construction."
"I read this book thinking that story would be interesting. And it was however, often the story tends to drag along, and since it is written in the slang of the 1800's, it can get quite confusing. I do reccomend this book, but only for people with patience. It is very original, and will keep readers in suspense every so aften."
"These book became tedious because of the seemingly inumerable variations of what could have happened to E. A. Poe. I liked the premise, I liked the ending but you have to do quite a lot of enduring to get to the end. I listened to an audio version so didn't skip any of it but don't know if I'd have read the last run through of all the stuff that could have happened because I would have quit before then. I felt a little that way about the Dante book, but dealing with two master sleuths plus the lawyer who was trying to figure them out was a little much. This may mean I've read too many quick read mysteries or it may be a serious flaw in Matthew Pearl's writing style. No question he loved his subject. I enjoyed the author talk at the end of the audio."
