About this title: Deborah Tannen is both a serious linguist and a popularizer whose best-selling forays into interpersonal communication are usually shelved in self-help sections of bookstores. In YOU'RE WEARING THAT? Tannen tackles the thorny issue of mother-daughter relationships, and shows that, as she has said before, we "just don't understand." Tannen's examples of mother-daughter talk, some of which are pretty pointed, will strike a chord with readers, and she contributes a structured and insightful analysis of the multi-layered communication, both direct and indirect, that too often leads to anger and ...

"Tannen is probably the foremost American linguist who writes for the general public. I gave this three stars rather than two because I am fascinated by sociolinguistics and appreciate Tannen's work, but this particular book undewhelmed me. I didn't find much new in the content; maybe having four grown daughters close in age has taught me about this type of communication by personal experience. In general, I recommend Tannen for understanding human communication."
"I keep picking this up and then putting it down - some of it strikes really close to home, and some of it I can't relate to at all - you can definitely tell that the subjects are all American and some of their experiences are quite different (like the mother and daughter fighting over the daughter's 1 hour twenty commute!!! Imagine driving that far to work!). It's nice to see things from the point to view of mothers, and to hear my own experiences as a daughter validated too.
Finished. I quite enjoyed this - it is pretty insightful. I think all mothers and daughters should read this, really. The last chapter, which has all sorts of suggestions to for avoiding conflict, was pretty helpful. Recommended."
"Tannen was a must-read for interpersonal communication classes and is most noted for her research on the differences between male and female communication styles. Aside from obvious issues with mother-daughter communication, there were some surprisingly fresh ideas that she delved into. Good."
