"I used to own the first edition, but some misguided person lifted it from my library so I picked up a new printing. Still good basic stuff, but the same old, old recipes; mine are far superior."
"I suppose it isn't fair to review this book before I actually go through my first homebrew experience. The book came very highly recommended to me by many dear friends who brew. And I can see why the book is appealing; it is full of clear recipes, has helpful instructions, quick overviews of different beer styles, and goes over a lot of terminology (and it includes a glossary in the back).
I liked that Papazian reminds you over and over again that this is supposed to be fun and not to stress out about it. As a perfectionist I really need someone to tell me that I should just relax, keep my priorities in order, and embrace the experience. That said-- the book does (ironically) make homebrewing seem awfully overwhelming. It might be that there is so much detail here that when I read "sterile environment" I think operating theater and not "clean your stuff." That's just me, I'm sure. Plus, there is math and chemistry involved, not a lot, just enough to give you a sense of the why behind brewing. That's nice, but it also means that I feel like I need to "get" all the chemistry or my beer will taste like goat pee.
It's got to be tough in a book like this to find the balance of detail to "you can do it! Just follow these 3 easy steps" optimism. In general I do feel like I understand beer more now. I'm sure that when I venture to the homebrew supply shop next weekend and they start asking me about worts and funnels and all sorts of other things I wont feel COMPLETELY overwhelmed."
