"As the titled indicates, this book is a collection of Ansel Adams' classic photographs. Since I had heard of this great American photographer but had no idea who he was or what his work was about, I decided to check out this book from the library. For me, I appreciated learning about Adams' family history, as well as how his passion for photography evolved from a hobby towards a lifelong vocation. After paging through this book several times, it is my opinion that Adams' photographic work really is masterful and artful. I hope to find other titles by or about Adams from which to learn from."
"Walsall Art Gallery in the West Midlands, UK, is currently displaying most of the pictures in this book. They are much better in real than in the book but having seen them the book is a great way of reminding us how good the originals are. This would have been 5 stars if it were not for a photograph where the printers (Italian) had messed up and blodged a bit on one photograph. I shall write to the publishers and tell them. We got the book with discount so don't feel so bad.
Ansel Adams is well known for his black and white photographs of the natural landscape of United States, many of which were taken in Yosemite National Park. He was a shaker in the early environmental movement and was instrumental in the conservation of much of wild America. The USA was the first in the world in setting up protected areas of countryside. Ansel didn't like the 'pictorialism' of early American photography and promoted 'realism'. This meant a move away from soft impressionistic type photography towards a harder, more focused, everything sharp, highly contrasty type of photography that reflected the new technology rather than looking back to the softness of painters at the end of the 19th century and in the early part of the 20th century. He used a technique of 'visualisation' where he planned how the photograph was going to look prior to taking the photograph. This would include all of the darkroom techniques that he employed in the developing and printing of his pictures."
