About this title: Humans of all eras and cultures have lived with fear: of becoming jaguar prey, of being besieged by Vikings or of nuclear holocaust. "I really like the idea of collections of folktales from around the world, organized by topic. (Here: Fear). Most of the stories here are fine to great, although there were a few that didn't seem to have much at all to do with the idea of fear. The thing that drags this book down is the editor's attempts to make this her own book. She's essentially just collected these stories from other previously published sources, which is great and fine. But she intersperses them with her own story of dealing with fear after 9/11 and how these folktales helped her. None of it was fun or interesting to read, sorry."
"The introduction promises a Arabian Nights-like set-up, with Ragan acting as a Scheherazade telling the collected stories as a way of coping with 9/11. In reality, it's simply a collection of folk stories all dealing with fear in some way or another, broken up by short, confessional pieces about Ragan's own life and thoughts on being a mother, wife, woman and citizen of the world."
