"I was fortunate enough to examine several extremely early editions of Curtis's portfolios, and I must confess that they are quite breathtaking when viewed full-sized. The devotion that Curtis exhibited toward the cause of creating a reverent, informative, and thorough visual history of North American Indians overshadows the moral issues raised by his use of props and his questionable creation of staged "candids" which did not necessarily create a completely accurate portrayal of some tribal customs, costumes, and rituals. Despite its oftentimes harmlessly intended yet deceptive qualities, this is a beautiful collection of images from a master craftsman, and one worth viewing with full awareness of the hostile sociopolitical contexts within which they were created."
"This is an unbelievable collection of photographs. Wish I could see it in a larger format to better soak in the many details but still very worth checking out."
"Absolutely stunning. The photographs in this book are taken from a twenty volume encyclopedia of the North American Indian tribes that Curtis compiled between 1895 and 1928. His work combines amazing artistry with the thoroughness of an historian and anthropologist. I only wish that Taschen had published this compilation in a larger format with a decent binding - a work this beautiful and informative deserves a far better presentation."
