About this title: Scripture reveals that the great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. In this paradigm-shattering classic, newly revised and expanded, John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn't truly exist: delight is our duty. "The first time I read this book in 2000, i understood very little of what this was talking about. I reread it 5 years later it had a huge impact on my life and how I've come to understand, interpret and sometimes still wrestle with the tougher questions of life and existence."
"Piper sets us free to admit and even move toward our desires by helping us to realize that God glorifies himself when we are most satisfied in Him. Delight is the duty of those who would know God and seek him. A classic on our motivation to seek Him."
"I love Piper. His passion for Christ is contagious and it is by God's grace alone that Piper has this passion. Therefore I thank God for using Piper.
There was really only one concept I took from Desiring God and that is: Delight yourself in the LORD!
Certainly, there were many other insights gleaned, but this was the one insight I wished to hold onto, the one insight I did not want to release.
There is perhaps only one negative about this book and other books by Piper: his writing style.
Piper writes with oodles and oodles of passion and sometimes, I think, this affects the flow or organization of his writing and/or of his thoughts. It is difficult at times to connect the thoughts he has written down. I sometimes receive the sense that I am staring into the sun when I read his books, that I am immersed in beautiful truths, but am not able to distinguish two truths from one another or how the truths affect one another.
BUT
I still love and enjoy his writing because I can feel his passion for Christ, for the truths of God, and for the God who is love. Piper continually brings me back to Christ and Christ continually renews my soul. Desiring God was awesome."
"I was surprised with how much of this book I actually agreed with. Piper holds a higher view of God's sovereignty than I do, but I walked into the book knowing that. I enjoyed his chapter on conversion the most. Piper also made a good point about disinterested worship and how it has been subversive to worship in general. However, I wondered if Piper had ever considered what consumerism has done to the church and worship.
What I didn't enjoy was that fact that Piper reads like a man with Tourette syndrome. Someone should have told him that examples, stories and biblical quote do not substitute for content. I understand that authors need to explain themselves but Piper takes it way to far. I am also unsure why he felt that he needed to include a whole chapter on marriage. I thought this would be a "Mere Christianity" type book but this chapter leads me to think that this is not the case. Why would you alienate those Christians who aren't married.
