A true masterpiece, "How I Learned..." tells the story of "Lil Bit"--who narrates the play in retrospect--and her pedophile uncle, Peck, whose driving lessons are coupled with lessons of a far darker sort. Combining a clever dramatic structure, pitch-black Southern Gothic comedy, and heartbreaking realism, Vogel pulls of the tricky feat of keeping both main characters human and complex--Lil Bit is not as innocent nor Peck as villainous as we would like. Meanwhile, "The Minneola Twins" a dark comedy that combines political satire and John Waters-style camp, is fun but ultimately not that illuminating. The play tells the story of twins--Myra, a sixties radical/lesbian/pro-choice activist and Myrna, a conservative fundamentalist/pro-life militant--that has lots of fun with the ideological pomposity of both characters but feels dated in the political punch it is trying to pack."
