About this title: Composed in medieval Iceland, Hrolf's Saga is one of the greatest of all mythic-legendary sagas, relating half-fantastical events that were said to have occurred in fifth-century Denmark. It tells of the exploits of King Hrolf and of his famous champions, including Bodvar Bjarki, the bear-warrior': a powerful figure whose might and bear-like nature are inspired by the same legendary heritage as Beowulf. Depicting a world of wizards, sorceresses and berserker' fighters originally members of a cult of Odin this is a compelling tale of ancient magic. A work of timeless power and beauty, it ...

Combining heroic legend, myth and magic, this saga is full of wizards, sorceresses and ‘ berserker' fighters, originally members of a cult of Odin. A powerful human drama with deep historical roots, extraordinary events and fierce battle scenes, Hrolf's Saga ranks among the masterworks of the Middle Ages. "You can't really review this as you would a regular, modern book. The sagas and tales from ages past weren't written for the type of mass audiences and critical acceptance that authors today contend with.
The value and interest in the old sagas are both historical curiosity (what themes and archtypes mattered way back when) and to see how our modern sagas and epics grew out of what was once told around a campfire or passed from town to town by traveling bards. It's impossible to look at something like this or the Nibelungelied without recognizing the influence on Lord of the Rings.
So I'm not going to go into the plot or the characterization. Because this or the Saga of the Volsungs is not about impressing the audience with deep, three-dimensional figures or reinventing the rules of any genre. It's about heroism, great and noble deeds, the legends of the (then) near past contending with fearsome monsters and evil adversaries.
It's not a question of if you'll like this particular story and its characters, but whether you appreciate the classic tales as a whole. If you do, then this is a must. If not, well, it's still a slim, fast read. Give it a try."
"The translator's introduction and endnotes are excellent, particularly in showing the relationships between this saga, Beowulf, and other works drawn from the same material.
Hrolf's Saga has all you'd expect: bears, berserkers, trolls, elves, Odin, fighting, hall-burning, sorcery, etc. It was set down in the fourteenth century, so the attitudes toward pagan elements are complicated. The story seems mostly intact, but some commentary by the author or later scribes makes it hard to tell, for example, how malevolent Odin would have been before Christianity reached Iceland. The notes help with this stuff quite a bit, but nothing can sort it out completely.
What did I learn from reading this book? That the old legal codes of several Scandinavian countries have laws against killing people by throwing bones at them. Throwing bones at people for fun is apparently frowned upon, but not too badly as long as you don't kill."
