"This book is by the journalist who was killed a couple of years ago -probably because she was too clear about how little Russia has changed from the Stalinist days. Some pretty brutal stories about the Chechen Wat and other miseries of living in current-day Russia."
"According to Winston Churchill, Russia is "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside of an enigma." Few people today know very much about government in post-communist Russia, but Politkovskaya cleary lays out the case against Putin and his cohorts by telling compelling stories of governmental exploitation, which rarely make news outside (or even inside) Russia's borders."
"Heartbreaking. Politkovskaya isn't necessarily an objective journalist (although I would argue that few, if any, journalists are actually objective), but she is writing about something that for her, and for millions of Russians, is intensely personal. I do agree that the style was a little hard to read a times, but I don't know if that was due to Politkovskaya's writing or to the interpretation of the translator. I got bogged down in a few spots, but I definitely feel that this book is worth reading."
