"One of the greatest lessons I took away from this book is the concept of breathing through difficult moments, in parenting and in life. This definitely applies to childbirth (which was the primary focus) but I have found it very helpful in my day to day parenting.
The idea that we can manage stress, anxiety and fear through educating ourselves, relaxation and conscious living seems intuitive enough, but putting it into practice really changes the way I SEE challenges. These relaxation techniques have helped me approach moments where I would of otherwise lost patience or felt discouraged, instead feel calm, creative and even find humor.
After practicing the breathing techniques very diligently during my pregnancy, I had a harder time implementing them during labor than I thought I would. I think having a doula or midwife who is well trained in this method along side of me would of helped tremendously, or having prepared with my husband by taking a class together also could of helped. I made it a lot further along naturally because of my hypnobirthing preparation though than I ever would have otherwise.
I read and re-read this book several times! Great book!"
"I liked the ideas that were in this book. I do believe that the lady who wrote it made it seem like natural birth was the only way to go. That women make things worse by having drugs. My kids were both epidural babies and they are just fine. They were mostly good babies. I like the breathing exercises but some of the ideas in it are a little opinionated for someone trying to teach others how to use the program. I think hypno birthing sounds cool and I will try but there is nothing wrong with an epidural. I was fine. I felt like a champ when I delivered my son. I think if anyone tries this they need to practice a lot earlier then a few weeks before they're due date."
"My husband and I planned to deliver our first child with this method. We really felt comfortable with it, especially since she presents such an intelligent way to go about things. We even had a friend successfully use it in the delivery room. It seems to require a pretty willing husband, which mine was, and a sense of compliance- no buts. Let go of the fears and relax... it's not "if I can." It's "I can and will." Not at all the hypnotizing glamorized on tv- just simple relaxation methods that really worked for me during the pregnancy. The instructor was extremely biased against C-sections but thinking back,he really had to be. This is a method you have to give 100% to. What did I have? An emergency c-section. Go figure. The methods, though, apply to other areas of life quite well. I give it 3 stars because some of the book is a little too much talk without getting down to the point. Very informational when it did. Long review!"
"So I was pleasantly surprised how non-wierd this book was. I was a liitle worried it would be too "out there" from what I am used to thinking, but most of the ideas and techniques really make sense and I am excited to put them to practice. The only thing that made me laugh were some of the relaxation methods, but there are so many suggested so one can choose the method that makes sense to them, and in my case, the one I didn't laugh at. The maid idea behind hypnobirthing is that when in labor you can reach a certain relaxed state through practiced breathing exercises that are different with each stage of birthing. I think it sounds pretty cool and I'm going to do it, but I guess my real review of the book will have to be after I have put it to practice, which means I re-write this in about 5 months."
