"I recently went to BYU education week and took a class on understanding gender differences. The teacher cited this book a lot so I decided to check it out from our library.
I really enjoyed most of it. It basically goes through the life of a female brain from conception of the fetus to the death of a woman. When I picked it up I thought it was only going to focus on an adult brain going through changes (pregnancy, motherhood, menopause, etc.). I was really excited that it talked so much about our brains as they develop. It was fun to read about what my 9 month old daughter's brain is doing. It really helped me understand what my 3 year old girl was going through right now! Who knew little girls go through toddler "puberty" with the mood swings to boot! And it did help me understand my ups and downs through pregnancy, breastfeeding, being a mom, wife, etc...
The only part that wasn't that interesting was the teenage brain part! Maybe because that was such a hard part of life to actually live through. :-) I enjoyed reading that part because someday my little girls will turn in to teen girls and it was interesting to see what will be floating through their brains. But the example girl she uses is a bit frightening and the things the mom of the girl accepts kind of bothered me. Basically, I understand her point that our brain chemistry can affect our choices but the teen girl was also making some pretty big mistakes that could just be personality stuff too. I don't know. Anyway, I'm glad I'm just worrying about pre-school problems for the moment!
Overall I really found this book informative and interesting. Even though she is putting forth a lot of science info. she keeps it really engaging and uses a lot of stories to illustrate her points. I think understanding gender differences is really important for a marriage and it helps me understand how I and how my husband see things."
"This is an easy to read source for a lot of information about the human brain, and the distinct differences between the female brain and the male brain. She seems very honest about the medical understanding of the human brain and how her experiences as a psychiatrist relate to them.
EVERY male should read this, preferably before he considers marriage. (Did I emphasize that enough? EVERY MALE!) Women should read this so that they can understand why we are so different.
Not only is it easy to read, it's fun to read.
Men, you will discover that the things you suspect are true about women, though they will deny it, ARE TRUE! Dr. Brizendine gives you the physiological reasons why.
The back of the book says something like "Men, get ready to have brain envy." After reading this I can't think of anything that would persuade me that I'd rather have a female brain!
At least I now understand females a better. Notice I didn't say I understand them, it's just better.

There tend to be two pitfalls in any work on the biological differences between the sexes. First, people will often generalize the results from experiments with animals. Brizendine is usually pretty careful about making it clear where her data come from, but it's still a good idea to use caution.
Second, books and articles like this tend to be written in very absolute language that ignores both the variation within a given group and the fact that biology is not destiny. Women like me who never had a problem playing with boys as children and who didn't start obsessing over their appearance and spending all their time on the telephone when they hit their teenage years aren't given much consideration here, except for a bit of speculation that they might have higher-than-normal levels of testosterone. Which might be true, but it seems hard to believe that every woman who doesn't meet the highly gendered patterns of behavior that Brizendine lays out is simply someone who has her hormones out of whack.
As a last complaint, readers who actually have a bit of a background in biology or biochemistry are going to find some of Brizendine's explanations lacking in detail or overly cutesy.
Having said all that, the book is an easy and entertaining read, and definitely thought-provoking. And it comes with a huge bibliography for those who want to follow up on scientific nitty-gritty."
