"Interesting information about Molokai and it's leper colony. When you think lepers you think ancient history but this colony was extinguished not so long ago. This is a depiction of yet another set of people in our society who have been persecuted, outcasted and deemed less than human. I found this book very informative."
"I think it is very well written, engaging, well researched. Controversial with the patients still in Kalaupapa, who cooperated at its start, but backed away for (?) some reasons that were never made clear, but that is not unusual for this location/situation. Highly recommened by me, and I live in Kalaupapa! I've read 2x."
"I really enjoyed this book. It really opened my eyes to things I'd never thought about. It's such a commentary on how we treat each other when we're afraid of them. It also highlighted the good that we're capable of, even in the worst situations. The author makes it clear that there were no easy answers to the problem of leprosy, but terrible things were done in the name of public safety. This book was fascinating. It was fun to get to know the people involved, especially the ones who are living. Tayman really made them come alive to me, and I feel like he portrayed them with respect and admiration."
"Okay, I finally finished this book, but I really just skimmed the last hundred pages or so. It was nothing but dates and names, and the people began running together after awhile. I couldn't remember who was who, and I know it was nonfiction, but gosh, was it boring. There are ways to make nonfiction interesting, but this guy doesn't know them. I read some reviews of the books that mentioned controversy--apparently after the book came out, some of the recent people profiled took offense to some things. I didn't actually notice anything particularly offensive written about those people, so I'm not sure what it was about. It didn't detract from the story--that was done in the writing. If you want a book about the Molokai colony, the fictional Molokai is a lot more interesting."
