About this title: The modem American economy was the creation of four men: Andrew Camegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J. P. Morgan. They were the giants of the Gilded Age, a moment of riotous growth that established America as the richest, most inventive, and most productive country on the planet. Acclaimed author Charles R. Morris vividly brings the men and their times to life. The ruthlessly competitive Camegie, the imperial Rockefeller, and the provocateur Gould were obsessed with progress, experiment, and speed. They were balanced by Morgan, the gentleman businessman, who fought, instead, for a ...

"Morris does a capable job in this fairly brief survey of the rise of the US as an economic powerhouse, and the way that the work of four men in particular (Jay Gould, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan) played key roles in that rise. He seems to strike a good balance between the influence of these men and the sociological factors which enabled them to play their parts. The prose is accessible and the narrative pretty clear."
"While the book discusses the four men and their relationships to/with each other, it also describes the 'business history' of the era. It is an overview, perhaps a light introductory book to the 'progressive era.'"
"I read a few random chapters of this book as research for a paper on J. P. Morgan. It was interesting and later I plan to go back and read the whole thing."
