Donald Miller tells how he and a new friend, Paul--two "Republican rebels"--set out from Houston, Texas, with Oregon as their vague destination. Paul reflects on people, places, and things that he sees along the way, but also ...

"Another home run by Donald Miller. What's great about this book is that it was written well before Blue Like Jazz and Searching for God Knows What, so having read those two first I kind of know how Don's "story" ends; and Through Painted Deserts is how his story begins, aka how Don Miller first starts to question his relationship with God outside of American Christian rhetoric. Through Painted Deserts is a beautiful journal, essentially, that Don kept as he traveled 3 months with his good friend Paul. I read this book while traveling in and out of the Dallas airport, and so I felt a kinship with Don who was leaving Houston, TX for Oregon. Donald Miller writes like I would if I could, I love him and can't wait for his newest book which comes out next month. Thanks to brother in law Rob for letting me borrow this book of his! :)"
"I really enjoyed this book. Don Miller shares wonderfully his call to leave (purgation) and takes us with him on this pilgrimage through America and his heart. If you are looking at Blue Like Jazz as well, I'd recommend reading this book first and then Blue Like Jazz.
"I liked Blue Like Jazz better, but I liked the story in this book. I sort of wish he hadn't spent so much time writing about the canyon, and a little more about the rest of the trip, and I could have done with a little more self-reflection, but what was there was good, and he said a lot of things that I agree with, have thought of myself, or have always believed but never knew quite how to put it. I also now want to go to Oregon."
"Great book. It paints a beautiful picture of Miller's search for God, and how he finds Him in the most amazing places and through unexpected relationships. It's a good companion to Miller's Blue Like Jazz. Many of the events he refers to in Jazz are in this book."
