"This is the third Steve Berry book I've read and the first one I appreciated and really liked. Credits to the author's thorough research and the way he mixed fact and fiction in one page-turning book. His writing style in this book was really different from the first two I've read (The Romanov Prophecy, Alexandria Link). It had that captivating factor that kept me reading it to the last page. No immature characters, no name-calling, a little sex and a lot of controversy. Religion has always been a sensitive topic to write about and the way this book was written was vivid, excellent, and informative. I also liked the writer's note where he discusses his research and separates fact and fiction. Characters are human, popes are not perfect, the suspense is always there and the danger is ever-present. All of them have redeeming value, clues about events are there and the part I liked best is I wasn't able to predict what happens next. Great read!"
"Great, great work of story. Perfect page-turner for the genre. The plot is fast-paced. You'd think I really loved the book ...
Except for the underlying plot, the search for the Third Secret of Fatima. As other reviewers have stated, Mary, I guess, has read enough public opinion polls in the 1990s and 2000s to let her voice be heard: "Choice for women. Marriage for priests. Sex between any two who love each other."
Berry actually has the gall to have Mary say, "Your body is yours." Great thought in the Roe v. Wade present, but completely unBiblical. You are God's. Your body is God's. Life is God's.
Besides this really stupid offering to political-correctness, it was a great book. Really enjoyed all but the four or five pages of Third Secret stupidity."
"I do love a "Catholic conspiracy" novel. Steve Berry gets a lot of comparison to Dan Brown, and while I have to agree that Brown's stories are more riveting, personally, I think Berry is the better writer.
I really enjoyed this book. "The Third Secret" is the first I've read from Berry, so I have high hopes for the next one I plan to read. The book was written before John Paul II passed away, but in the story, he had already passed, and a new pope, Clement XV, spends his nights in the Vatican vaults, obsessed over the third secret of Fatima. The third secret had been hidden away since 1917, and revealed to the world in 2000. But the revelation was so anticlimactic, many have wondered if the entire third secret was told.
Clement instructs his papal secretary, Colin Michener, to discover all he can about the third secret of Fatima, while ambitious men within the Vatican plot to gain power for themselves.
I could hardly put this book down. It made me late for work a couple of times! The ending disturbed me a little bit, but it was still, overall, a very good book. I hope the others he has written are just as riveting."
"A VATICAN THRILLER THAT FAILS TO THRILL. A SERPENTINE PLOT INVOLVING IRREVERENT POPES, AMBITOUS CARDINALS ,MARIAN VISIONS AND FALLEN PRIESTS. THE CONFLICT BETWEEN TRADITIONALISTS AND PROGRESSIVES THREATENS THE ROCK OF ST. PETER'S CHURCH. THE THIRD SECRET REVEALS A POPULAR LIBERAL AGENDA. THE VIRGIN MARY IS PRO CHOICE, ADVOCATES FEMALE CLERICS AND MARRIED PRIESTS.BERRY COMMITS FICTIONAL HERESY. THE NOVEL IS BORING FOR NON-CATHOLICS AND ARRESTING FOR CATHOLICS. THOSE READERS WHO SEEK VATICAN THRILLERS WILL FIND MARTIN'S WINDSWEPT HOUSE MORE SATISFYING."
